How fast that door opens depends on a few things you can actually influence. Here’s what sets the clock, what the driver does when he gets there, and what to have ready so it’s over before your ice cream melts.

Fenton and Park West Village are two different lockouts

Fenton sits in the northwest corner of the I-40 and Cary Towne Boulevard interchange on the east side of Cary. The restaurants, shops, apartments and the movie theater line a walkable main street, and most of the parking is a street back in decks and lots. Lockouts here happen after dinner or a late movie: keys left on the seat, a fob zipped into a bag, a car that locked itself on level three at 11 p.m. From our side of town it’s a straight run down the interstate, with the Maynard Road loop as the backup at rush hour.

Park West Village is on the southeast corner of Chapel Hill Road (NC-54) and Cary Parkway in Morrisville, and it’s the opposite kind of place: open air and spread out, with a town-center block of restaurants and the theater, a big-box section with the anchor stores, and wide surface lots between them. This is where the classic grocery-store lockout happens. Hands full, keys set on the seat, door swung shut, auto-lock timer finishes the job. It’s practically next door to our base, which is why we cover Cary fast from Morrisville.

What actually sets the clock on a lockout

The unlock is not the slow part. The drive is. Where our nearest truck is when you call, whether it’s a Tuesday afternoon or a Saturday night, and what I-40 and Cary Parkway are doing decide most of your wait. We give you a real ETA on the phone, and if the truck is finishing a tow across town, we say so.

Next is finding you. Fenton’s decks look alike from the inside, a white SUV on level three is one of twenty, and Park West Village’s lots are long and busy. In a deck we need the deck, the level and the nearest stairwell; in a lot, the store you’re facing and the row. That saves more time than anything the driver does with his tools.

Then the vehicle: a pickup with a mechanical lock button and a new SUV with keyless entry and flush handles are two different jobs. And last, proof of ownership. The driver confirms the vehicle is yours before he opens it, and your registration is usually locked inside with the keys, so have a photo ID ready, and your insurance card on your phone if you can.

What the driver actually does at your door

First he looks at the door and the locking system, because the tool depends on the car. On most vehicles he slides a protective guard into the top of the door frame and uses an inflatable wedge to open a small gap, just enough for a long-reach tool to press the unlock button or pull the interior handle. The paint and the weather seal stay where they are. On older cars with a post lock on the sill, a different tool lifts the post.

What he never does is go into the window channel with a slim jim on a modern car. That’s how people end up with a dead window regulator or airbag wiring pulled loose, and the repair costs many times what the lockout does.

A few designs take longer: coupes and convertibles with frameless windows, vehicles that deadlock when the fob is pressed twice so the interior handles do nothing, flush handles with the only unlock button buried in the console, and cargo vans with a bulkhead, which open from the cab only.

When the door opens, he checks that the keys are where you thought. If they’re in the trunk, he pops it from inside or folds a rear seat. If the fob is dead rather than locked in, he shows you the mechanical key hidden inside it and the keyhole under the cap on the driver’s door handle. If the keys are truly gone, the same truck turns the lockout into a tow. What to do when you’re locked out at Fenton or Park West Village

1. Make sure everyone is out. A child or a pet locked inside is an emergency, not a lockout. Call 911 first, then call us and say so; it goes to the front of the line.
2. Try every door and the hatch. Auto-lock timers don’t always catch a rear door that was opened last, and that thirty-second check ends a surprising number of lockouts.
3. Pin your spot. At Fenton: the deck, the level, and the stairwell or storefront you walked out of. At Park West Village: the town-center block or the big-box lots, the store you’re facing, and the row. Note your make, model, color and plate.

Mistakes that turn a lockout into a repair bill

The coat hanger is still the most common one. It scratches the paint, tears the weather seal, and on most cars built this century it can’t reach anything useful. Breaking a window is worse: a rear quarter glass on a modern SUV costs several times what a lockout does, the alarm goes off, and you drive home with glass in the seat. Prying the door too far bends the frame and leaves you permanent wind noise on US-1. In winter, forcing a frozen handle snaps it off.

Then there are the mistakes that happen on the phone. Calling the first number on a search ad, which may dispatch someone from anywhere at a price that changes on arrival, instead of a local company that answers with its own name. Sitting on hold with your insurance roadside plan for an hour while a dog pants in the back seat. Or walking off for coffee without telling anyone while the driver circles the deck.

The bigger question is the one people ask standing next to the hood: do I need a jump, or a new battery? Here’s how to tell, what our driver actually does, and what moves the price.

Why batteries die at Crossroads Plaza, and in every other Cary lot

Crossroads Plaza sits at Walnut Street and Crossroads Boulevard, right off US-1/US-64 at Exit 101. It’s one of Cary’s busiest shopping areas, and it produces dead-battery calls for the same reasons Waverly Place, Fenton, and Park West Village do.

First, the weather. Heat kills batteries faster than cold does. A Cary summer cooks the inside of a battery for months, and September still runs into the 90s. The damage shows up on the first cool morning, or after the car sits for two hours while you shop and a tired battery can’t spin the starter.

Second, short hops across the lot with the headlights, blower, and screen on never give the alternator time to put back what the starter took out. Then the car sits with a hatch light on, and that finishes it.

Third, age. Most batteries give you somewhere around three to five years, and Cary’s heat pushes you toward the short end. If yours is four summers old, a slow crank isn’t bad luck. It’s a warning.

Jump start or new battery? How to tell before we get there

You don’t have to diagnose it, but the sound the car makes tells us a lot, so listen once before you call.

• Rapid clicking, dim dash lights: the battery is low. A jump almost always works, and the battery may be fine if a light was left on.
• Nothing at all, no lights, no chime: the battery is fully flat or a terminal clamp is loose or corroded. A jump usually works once the connection is cleaned.
• Slow, groaning crank for the past few mornings: the battery is aging. A jump gets you home, but replace it soon.
• Jumped yesterday, dead again today: the battery won’t hold a charge, or the alternator isn’t charging it. A second jump is a bandage, not a fix.
• One loud click and no crank: usually the starter. A jump won’t help; the same truck tows you to a shop.
• Cranks strong but won’t fire: not the battery. Fuel, spark, or immobilizer trouble needs a mechanic.

With push-button start, a dash that lights up normally but won’t recognize the key means a dead fob battery, not a dead car.

If the car cranked slowly last week, or it has been through a few Cary summers, the honest answer is “jump today, new battery this week.” A jump start is a bridge to the parts store, not a repair.

What the WTF Towing driver actually does

First he looks before he connects. Corroded or loose terminals mimic a dead battery, and a cracked, swollen, or leaking case means the battery gets left alone and the call becomes a tow. Then he confirms polarity and connects to the right points, which on many newer cars means remote jump posts under the hood because the battery lives in the trunk or under a seat. Hybrids and EVs have a 12-volt battery that can strand you even when the main pack is full. He knows where those are.

Once it’s running, he checks the charging system. If the alternator isn’t feeding the battery, you’ll be back where you started before you reach US-1, and it’s better to learn that in the lot. Then you get a straight answer: “you left a light on, the battery’s fine,” or “this one’s done, go get a battery today and don’t shut it off until you’re there.” We don’t sell or install batteries, so there’s no upsell in that answer.

We quote the price upfront on the phone. What changes the number is the same short list that drives every roadside call. Where you are: Crossroads Plaza is a short, direct run from our base in Morrisville, while a lot in RTP or Holly Springs takes longer. When you call: nights, weekends, and holidays are covered 24/7, but they’re not priced like a Tuesday afternoon. Access: a car on the top level of a deck, in a tight garage, or with a battery under the rear seat takes more time than one in an open lot. And whether it stays a jump or becomes a tow matters most of all.

Common mistakes that turn a dead battery into a bigger bill

The most expensive one is a stranger’s jumper cables. The wrong order, or clamps touching, can blow fuses and damage modules on a modern car, and many cheap cables are too thin to start a truck anyway. If you’re not certain of the order, don’t.

The second is cranking too long. Holding the key for thirty seconds on a weak battery overheats the starter. Short tries, with everything else switched off.

The third is treating the jump as the fix. Idle five minutes in the lot, shut it off at home, and it’s dead again in the driveway at 6 a.m. Give it a real drive, and if the driver said it’s done, replace it that day. Every deep discharge shortens what’s left.

The fourth is ignoring the cause. A trunk light that never turns off, a dashcam wired to constant power, or a door that doesn’t latch will drain a new battery just like the old one. Tell the driver.

People search “towing Morrisville NC” from the shoulder of NC-54 or a deck at the airport, and they want to know who is actually nearby. Here’s the honest answer: where we’re based, which roads we take into Cary, what “fast” really depends on, and what to have ready when you call.

Where Morrisville sits, and why a tow company wants to be here

Pull up a map of western Wake County and Morrisville is the hinge. Cary wraps around it to the south and east. Research Triangle Park sits across the county line to the northwest. RDU Airport is on the northeast corner. I-40 runs along the top of town, NC-540 (the Triangle Expressway) along the west side, and NC-54, called Chapel Hill Road here, cuts through the middle from RTP toward downtown Cary.

That geography is the whole reason we’re here. A truck rolling out of Morrisville has a short, direct run to almost everywhere our customers break down: the I-40 corridor between Airport Boulevard and Harrison Avenue, the terminals and ParkRDU lots at the airport, the office parks along Davis Drive and in RTP, Park West Village, and all of Cary from Preston and Weston down to Crossroads Plaza and Waverly Place. A company based across Raleigh has to cross the Beltline and all of I-40 through Cary before it even starts your job.

Local also means the driver knows the spot you’re describing: “the shoulder of 54 just past the 540 ramps” is enough, even at night when you’re not sure of the address.

The roads we take into Cary

Cary is a big town, and how quickly a truck reaches you depends on which part you’re in. From our side, the trip usually goes like this.

West Cary and Carpenter. Davis Drive runs straight south out of Morrisville, across Morrisville-Carpenter Road and on to High House Road. That’s the direct route to Cary Park, Carpenter, and the Green Level side.

Central Cary and downtown. NC-54 stays Chapel Hill Road into Cary, then becomes Maynard Road, the loop around downtown. From Maynard it’s a turn or two to Academy Street and Chatham Street.

Cary Parkway and the south side. N.W. Cary Parkway meets NC-54 right at the Morrisville line and arcs down through High House Road and Kildaire Farm Road to US-1 at Cary Parkway (Exit 99). That one road puts us at Waverly Place, the Kildaire Farm and Tryon Road corridors, and Crossroads Plaza off Exit 101 at Walnut Street.

East Cary and Fenton. I-40 eastbound from Aviation Parkway (Exit 285) gets us to Harrison Avenue (Exit 287), then Cary Towne Boulevard (Exit 291) for Fenton. For a job headed into Raleigh, we stay on I-40 or take Wade Avenue.

Apex, Holly Springs, and New Hill. NC-540 south to US-64 or NC-55 drops us into Apex. NC-55 continues to Holly Springs, and US-1 south past the US-64 split (Exit 98) covers the New Hill side.

RDU and RTP. Aviation Parkway runs north from NC-54, across I-40, straight to the airport and I-540; our RDU Airport towing page covers the terminals and the ParkRDU lots. For RTP it’s Davis Drive north or NC-54 west toward NC-147.

What “fast” actually depends on

We won’t print a response time here, because a number that’s true at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday is a lie at 5:30 p.m. on a Friday. What we can tell you is what moves the needle.

Where the truck is right now. With one wrecker and two rollbacks, sometimes the nearest truck is sitting at base in Morrisville and sometimes it’s finishing a job in Apex. Dispatch tells you which, and where it’s coming from, when you call.

Time of day and traffic. NC-54 and both directions of I-40 between the airport and the Beltline get heavy at rush hour; NC-540 and I-540 are usually the way around it, and we use them. Weather does the same: the first rain after a dry spell, or ice on the bridges, brings a wave of calls at once.

Which truck the job needs. A wheel-lift tow of a front-wheel-drive sedan can go to whichever truck is closest. An all-wheel-drive SUV, an EV, a lowered car, or anything with a bent wheel needs one of the rollbacks, so if both rollbacks are out, you’re waiting for a rollback. Tell us what you’re driving so the right one leaves the first time.

Where you are, exactly. Westbound I-40 just before Airport Boulevard and eastbound at the same spot are different trips, even a few lanes apart. Direction of travel and the nearest exit or cross street change the route.

What the driver does when he gets to you

On most Morrisville and Cary calls the job on the ground is simple. The driver pulls in ahead of your car with the beacons on and checks the vehicle: drivetrain, whether it rolls and steers, keys, damage. He decides on the spot whether it’s a wheel-lift job or a rollback job, then either sets the Jerr-Dan wheel-lift under the front or rear wheels, or tilts the 21-foot bed and winches the car up. Tie-downs at four points, a walk around the truck, and it’s rolling. In a driveway off Davis Drive or a lot at Park West Village, that’s a few minutes of work.

Not every call is a tow. If the car cranks but won’t start, a jump start often ends the job in the parking lot. Keys locked in the car outside Fenton? A lockout takes tools, not a tow. Flat on NC-55 with a good spare? A tire change. Ran dry on NC-540? Fuel delivery. Slid off the shoulder into the grass? A winch-out first, and a tow only if the car can’t drive away. The dispatcher sorts this out on the phone so the right truck leaves.

What it costs, and what moves the price

No dollar figures here, but the factors are simple, and being based in Morrisville helps with the first one. A tow is priced on the distance the truck travels to reach you, the loaded miles to wherever the car is going, which truck the job needs, and how much work it takes to get the car onto the truck. We don’t publish a price list, and you won’t find dollar figures here, because a wheel-lift tow from Crossroads Plaza to a shop on Chatham Street and a rollback run from an RDU parking lot to a dealer in Durham are different jobs. What you’re actually paying for

Most tow bills are built the same way. A hook-up fee, sometimes called a base rate, covers the truck coming out, loading your car, and unloading it at the other end. A mileage charge covers the loaded miles, from where the car sits to where it’s going. Some companies also bill the miles the truck drives to reach you, so ask whether the quote covers both legs. Extras apply only when the job calls for them: winching if the car is off the pavement, dollies if the wheels won’t roll, wait time, and storage if the car has to sit on a lot.

The number that matters is the total for your specific trip, hook-up and mileage together, with any extras the dispatcher can see coming. That’s the quote to ask for, and it’s the one we give.

Not every breakdown is a tow, either. A jump start, a tire change, a lockout, or fuel delivery is priced as a service call, and if it fixes the problem on the spot it’s the cheaper answer.

Distance is the biggest factor

Two distances matter. The first is how far the truck travels to reach you. We’re based in the Morrisville–Cary area, so most of Cary, Morrisville, and the RTP side of town is a short run for us.

The second is where the car is going, and that one you control. From the Walnut Street and Crossroads exit on US-1 (Exit 101) to a shop on Kildaire Farm Road is a short loaded run. From the same spot to a dealer on the far side of Raleigh, or out I-40 past Southpoint and up NC-147 into Durham, is a longer one, and it’s priced that way. Charlotte, Wilmington, and Greensboro are long-distance towing jobs, quoted as a whole trip.

The closest shop is usually the cheapest destination, but only if it can take the car. A shop that’s closed until Monday means the car moves twice and you pay twice. Deciding the destination before you call is the easiest way to keep a tow cheap.

Which truck shows up, and why it changes the number

We run a Ram 5500 wrecker with a Jerr-Dan wheel-lift and two Isuzu NRR rollback carriers with 21-foot Jerr-Dan beds. They do different jobs.

The wheel-lift picks up one end of the car and lets the other end roll. It’s quick, and it works in tight spots where a rollback can’t get lined up: a packed lot at Crossroads Plaza, a narrow driveway, the end of a cul-de-sac.

The rollback carries the whole car on the bed. It’s the truck for all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles, EVs, lowered cars, anything with a bent wheel or collapsed suspension, and anything that won’t roll or steer. Dragging an AWD car with two wheels on the ground can damage the drivetrain, and a lowered car can drag its front end once the rear is lifted, so for those vehicles the rollback is the only safe way. Weight matters too: a loaded work van takes longer to secure. But the expensive mistake isn’t the truck type, it’s the wrong truck arriving because nobody mentioned the car was AWD. Give us the year, make, model, and drivetrain and the right truck comes the first time.

The situation on scene: a simple hook-up or a recovery

On an easy call, here’s what the driver actually does: parks the truck in line with your car, sets the wheel-lift or tilts the bed, hooks or straps the car, gets it into position, secures it at four points, and goes. In a lot at Park West Village or a driveway off Davis Drive, that’s a few minutes of work.

What adds time, and cost, is a car that isn’t just sitting on pavement. One that slid off the shoulder of NC-55 into wet grass needs a winch-out before the tow can start; our post on what a Cary winch-out looks like walks through that job. A crash on I-40 or at the US-64 split off US-1 (Exit 98) means wheels turned in, fluids on the road, and law enforcement directing where the car can go, so the driver is working with dollies instead of a clean hook-up. A low-clearance deck, a car locked in park with no keys, a sloped driveway: each one is more rigging and more time. A highway shoulder, like US-1 at Cary Parkway (Exit 99), is its own situation; our post on breaking down on US-1 in Cary covers it.

Time of day comes up too. Some companies add a night, weekend, or holiday charge. We’re open 24 hours, every day; whatever hour you call, ask for the total and you’ll have it before the truck rolls.

Last, storage. If the car can’t go straight to its final stop, say a crash at 2 a.m., it has to sit somewhere, and most towing companies charge storage by the day. Ask where the car will be, what that costs, and when you can get it released.

What your roadside plan changes, and what it doesn’t

Many Cary drivers have roadside coverage through an insurance policy, a credit card, a new-car warranty, or a membership plan. Most plans cover a tow up to a set number of miles or a set dollar amount, and past that limit you pay the difference. Some plans send a truck from their own network and you pay nothing at the curb; others let you call whoever you like and reimburse you afterward. They feel very different at midnight, so read your plan now.

After a crash, the tow is often part of the insurance claim instead, and your insurer may have a preference about where the car goes. Ask before it moves so it doesn’t move twice. Either way, keep the itemized invoice. We give you one on every job.

How to get a straight price from any Cary tow company

This works with any company:

1. Know exactly where you are. Road plus the nearest cross street, the US-1 exit number, the store you’re parked in front of, or a dropped pin.
2. Know what you’re driving. Year, make, model, and drivetrain. Say if it’s an EV, lowered, or loaded with tools or cargo.
3. Say what’s wrong, plainly. Does it start? Roll? Steer? Are the keys with you? Is it on pavement? Was it in a crash?
4. Decide where it’s going. Shop name and address, and whether they can take it now. After hours, confirm the shop has a key drop.
5. Ask for the total, not the base rate. Hook-up plus mileage to that address, with any extras the dispatcher can see coming.

7. Don’t try to fix it yourself first. Spinning the tires in mud, a stranger’s pull with a strap, or driving on a flat turns a small job into a bigger one.

The common mistakes are the opposite: leaving a car on the shoulder of I-40 or US-1 overnight, where law enforcement can have it removed at your expense; towing to a shop that’s closed; forgetting to mention the car is AWD; and calling for a tow when a jump start or a gallon of gas would have fixed it.

Common questions

Is a flatbed tow more expensive than a wheel-lift tow?

At some companies it is. The better question is which one your car needs. AWD, EVs, lowered cars, and damaged cars need the rollback, and putting them on the wrong truck costs far more than any price difference. Why would the price change when the truck arrives?

Because the job on the ground turned out to be different from the one described: the car was in the ditch rather than on the shoulder, the wheels don’t roll, or there’s a second vehicle involved. A good company tells you before doing extra work. Describe the situation accurately and this almost never happens.

Does my roadside plan cover the whole tow?

Up to its limit. Most plans cap the covered miles or dollars, and you pay anything beyond that. Your plan documents have the specifics.

Here is what a typical Cary winch-out looks like from the phone call to the car rolling away. Our earlier post on what a winch-out service is and when to call for one covers the basics; this one is about the job itself.

Where Cary cars get stuck

Cary sits on Piedmont red clay, and wet clay is about as slick as anything you will ever drive on. After a hard rain, the grass shoulders along the two-lane roads on the south and west sides of town — Holly Springs Road, Penny Road, Ten-Ten Road, Green Level Church Road, Old US-1 out toward New Hill — turn soft, and a right-side tire that drops off the edge sinks instead of climbing back up. The ditches beside those roads, and along the country roads toward Holly Springs and Apex, are deeper than they look from the driver’s seat.

In town it looks different. A car jumps a curb on Cary Parkway or Kildaire Farm Road and ends up high-centered on the median. Someone misses the edge of a driveway and puts two wheels in a wet front yard. At Crossroads Plaza, Fenton, and Park West Village, tall curbs and parking blocks catch the undersides of low cars. On US-1, I-40, and NC-540, it is usually a car that slid off the shoulder into the grass; our post on breaking down on US-1 in Cary covers that side of it. When ice hits, all of it happens at once.

The call: what we ask, and what to have ready

Location first, and precise: the road plus the nearest cross street, or a dropped pin. Then how the car is sitting: which wheels are off the pavement, whether it is nose-down or high-centered, and what it is resting against. Tell us the vehicle and whether it is all-wheel drive, electric, lifted, or lowered, because that decides which truck comes. Tell us what the ground is, and whether the car will start and steer. If anyone is hurt or the car is blocking a lane, call 911 before you call us.

What you do while you wait matters. Stop trying to drive out. Every spin of the tires digs the hole deeper, packs wet clay into the tread until the tire is as smooth as a racing slick, and cooks the transmission or the clutch. Put it in park, set the brake, hazards on. On a road shoulder, get out on the side away from traffic and stand well back; in a yard or a lot, staying in the car is fine. And politely decline the neighbor with a pickup and a strap.

Which truck comes, and where it parks

Most Cary winch-outs are handled by our Ram 5500 wrecker. It carries a Jerr-Dan wheel-lift and a winch, so it can pull from the pavement while the car is off it, then lift the front or rear wheels and tow if the car cannot be driven. Our two Isuzu NRR rollbacks, with 21-foot Jerr-Dan beds, carry a winch at the head of the bed. They come when the car needs to ride on a flatbed after the recovery anyway: all-wheel drive, electric vehicles, anything with damage underneath, or a car that will not roll, and they winch the car straight up the bed in one motion. Where the truck parks is the first decision the driver makes on scene. It stays on firm ground — pavement, packed gravel, a driveway — with its lights on, positioned so traffic from behind sees it before it sees you. A wrecker that follows the car into the mud is two stuck vehicles instead of one, so sometimes the right call is a longer line and a slower pull. On a road shoulder, North Carolina’s Move Over law tells drivers to move over or slow down for a tow truck with its amber lights on.

What the driver actually does

Walk-around first. The driver checks what the car is sitting on and what is under it: a differential resting on a curb, a control arm hooked on a root, a bumper cover pushed into the dirt. Then he finds the recovery point. Most cars have one: a fixed hook on trucks and many SUVs, or a threaded eye that screws into a covered hole in the bumper on many sedans and crossovers. Those points are built for a straight pull along the length of the car. If a factory point is not usable, he rigs to the frame or subframe with a rated strap and soft shackles — never to a suspension arm, an axle, a steering part, or the bumper cover.

Direction matters. A car nose-down in a ditch usually comes out backward from the rear recovery point, so the front end lifts instead of plowing. A car high-centered on a curb is lifted, not pulled: the wheel-lift picks it up off the obstacle and sets it down on its wheels. A car sunk in a yard may need a snatch block to change the angle and multiply the pull.

Then the setup: a line dampener over the cable, transmission in neutral, parking brake off, ignition on so the steering unlocks (an EV goes into its tow mode so the parking pawl releases). Everyone clears the area in line with the cable, including you. The pull is slow on purpose: low, steady tension, a few feet at a time, stop and look, pull again. If the car starts to swing, he stops and re-rigs rather than forcing it. Back on pavement, he does a second walk-around — tire sidewalls, anything hanging underneath, fluid on the ground, how the steering feels — and you decide together whether to drive it or ride to a shop on the truck.

A few cases change the plan. An all-wheel-drive car that cannot be driven afterward rides on the rollback, never on the wheel-lift. An EV carries its battery pack under the floor, so a high-center gets checked closely and the car goes on a flatbed if there is any doubt. Vans, box trucks, and machines stuck on job sites are medium-duty recoveries like the man lift we pulled out of gravel in Apex: same principles, heavier gear.

What drives the price of a Cary winch-out

We do not publish a flat number because two winch-outs on the same road can be very different jobs. What moves the price: how far the truck travels to reach you (we are based in the Morrisville–Cary area, so most of town is a short run); how far the car is from firm ground and how deep it is, since a tire dropped off the shoulder is a short job and a car sunk to the frame is not; the rigging required, whether a single straight pull, a snatch block, or a second truck; time on scene; the vehicle’s weight and drive type; and whether it needs a tow afterward. Many roadside plans cover a winch-out only when the car is within a short distance of a maintained road. Read yours before you assume.

Stuck right now? Do this

Common questions

Can’t a friend with a pickup just pull me out?

Sometimes, and sometimes it breaks something expensive or hurts somebody. A strap looped over a hitch ball can shear the ball off and send it flying. A strap on a bumper or a control arm bends whatever it is hooked to. A hard yank on a high-centered car drags it across the obstacle instead of lifting it over. And the pickup often ends up stuck beside you.

Will winching damage my car?

Not when it is rigged to the right point and pulled straight and slow. Most of the damage we see happened before the truck arrived: spinning, driving forward onto whatever the car was hung on, or a friendly pull.

My car is stuck in my own yard in Cary. Is that a call you’ll take?

Yes. It is an everyday kind of call after a rain, usually a car that slid off the driveway edge into wet grass. The truck stays on the driveway or the street and runs a long line, so we do not add ruts of our own. In a neighbor’s yard or a business’s landscaping, let the owner know before we pull.

US-1 through Cary is a freeway, not a street. Speeds are highway speeds, the shoulders vary from wide to almost nothing, and the interchanges at Walnut Street and Cary Parkway stay busy from the morning rush until late evening. A breakdown here isn’t like stalling in a shopping-center lot; the goal is to get you and the car out of there safely, fast. Here is exactly how to do that, and what happens once you call.

The first sixty seconds: get out of the travel lanes

The moment the engine stumbles, a tire lets go, or the dash lights up, signal right and start easing toward the shoulder while you still have momentum. A car that is coasting will roll a surprising distance; a car that is stopped in a live lane is the most dangerous thing on the road. Aim for the right shoulder, not the left — the left shoulder on US-1 is narrow, it sits against the median wall, and a tow truck can’t work there safely.

Once you’re stopped, hazards on, and put the car in park with the parking brake set. If you’ve made it to an exit ramp, a wide gravel shoulder, or a grassy area beyond the white line, even better: the farther you are from the fog line, the safer everyone is, including our driver.

If the car quit in a lane and will not move at all, stay belted, keep the hazards on, and call 911 before you call us. Law enforcement can protect the scene and get traffic moved around you; we’ll get there as soon as the road is safe to work.

Figure out where you are on US-1

The first thing we’ll ask is where you are, and “somewhere on US-1” costs time. US-1 through Cary carries the name Claude E. Pope Memorial Highway on the signs, and the exits give you the easiest landmarks:

• The I-40 / I-440 interchange at the Raleigh line — the north end of the Cary stretch.
• Exit 101 — Buck Jones Road / Walnut Street / Crossroads Boulevard, the busiest exit in town, next to the Crossroads shopping district.
• Exit 99 — Cary Parkway.
• Exit 98A — Tryon Road.
• Exit 98 — where US-64 splits off toward Apex and Pittsboro; south of here US-1 narrows and runs on toward Apex.

Tell us which direction you’re traveling (northbound toward Raleigh or southbound toward Apex), the last exit you passed, and what you can see — an overpass, a sign, a business. If you can, drop a pin in your phone’s map app and read us the coordinates, or share it by text. Any of these gets the truck to the right shoulder on the first pass instead of driving past you on the wrong side of the median.

Stay in the car, or get out?

There isn’t one answer, so here is how to decide. If the shoulder is narrow, traffic is heavy or fast, it’s dark, or it’s raining, stay in the car with your seat belt on. A belted person inside a stopped car with its hazards on is far better protected than a person standing beside it. This is doubly true at night — our guide to nighttime breakdowns covers why.

Get out only if you can get well away from traffic: over a guardrail, up an embankment, or across a wide grass strip. Exit on the passenger side, never the traffic side, and take kids and pets with you. Never stand behind the car, never stand between two vehicles, and don’t try to flag down other drivers. If the trunk is on the traffic side, leave whatever is in it — our driver will get it.

One more thing: North Carolina’s Move Over law requires drivers to change lanes or slow down for stopped tow trucks with their amber lights on. It protects our operator on your shoulder, and it’s the reason we ask every Cary driver to move over when they see one.

What to tell us when you call

You’ll talk to a person, not a menu. Have these ready and the call takes a couple of minutes:

• Where you are and which direction — see above.
• What you’re driving — year, make, model, and whether it’s all-wheel drive or electric. That decides which truck we send.
• What happened — won’t start, overheated, flat tire, a noise then nothing, a crash. Some of these don’t need a tow at all (more on that below).
• Where the car should go — home, your regular shop, a dealer in Cary or Raleigh, or a shop we trust if you don’t have one.
• How many people are with you, so the right truck comes.

You’ll get the price before the truck rolls, and the price you’re quoted is the price you pay. We take cash and cards. If you’d rather text your location than say it, that works too.

Which truck shows up, and why it matters

The rollbacks are for anything that shouldn’t roll on its own wheels: all-wheel-drive vehicles, electric vehicles, lowered cars, and cars with crash damage or a wheel that’s no longer pointing the right way. The whole vehicle rides on the bed. If you tell us “AWD” or “EV” on the phone, a rollback comes the first time and nobody has to wait for a second truck. What the driver actually does on the shoulder

Expect the truck to pull in behind you, angled out slightly with its lights running. That’s on purpose: the truck is a shield between traffic and the work. The driver will check on you first, look at the car, and tell you exactly what he’s about to do. Then he hooks up — wheel-lift under the drive wheels or the car winched up onto the bed — secures it with straps, and gets everyone off the shoulder. The paperwork happens in the cab or at the destination, not on the fog line. A highway shoulder is the most dangerous place in the whole job, so we don’t linger on it.

At the other end, the driver unloads where you’ve asked — in your driveway, in a shop’s lot, at a dealer’s service entrance — and, if it’s after hours, in a spot the shop can get to in the morning. Tows into Raleigh, Apex and the rest of the Triangle are routine runs for us.

It might not need a tow at all

A lot of US-1 “breakdowns” are fixed right there on the shoulder. A car that clicks but won’t crank usually needs a jump start, and we’ll tell you honestly whether the battery is done. A flat gets a roadside tire change if you have a spare, and a tow to a tire shop if you don’t. A gauge that was lower than you remembered gets fuel delivered, enough to reach a station. Two wheels off the pavement in the grass gets a winch-out. Tell us the symptoms, and we’ll send the fix instead of just a hook. The US-1 breakdown checklist

1. Signal right and coast to the right shoulder while you still have momentum.
2. Hazards on, park, parking brake set.
3. If you’re stuck in a lane and can’t move, stay belted and call 911 first.
4. Decide: stay belted inside (narrow shoulder, fast traffic, dark, rain) or get well clear of traffic on the passenger side.
5. Note your direction, the last exit you passed, and a landmark — or drop a pin.

What decides the cost

We don’t publish a price list because every call is different, but the factors are simple, and we’ll tell you the number before we move. Distance is the biggest one: from the Walnut Street exit to a driveway in Cary is a short run; to a dealer across Raleigh is longer. Vehicle type matters — a big SUV or a van on a rollback is a different job than a compact car on the wheel-lift. Recovery work adds to it if the car is off the pavement and needs to be winched back to the road. Time of day and holidays don’t: there’s no holiday rate, and no surprise on the invoice.

Common questions

The police are here. Do I have to use the tow company they call?

If your car is blocking a lane or creating a hazard, law enforcement may call a wrecker from their own rotation to clear the road quickly. If you’re safely on the shoulder and not in the way, you can call the company you want. Call us — we’ll tell you honestly how soon we can be there.

Can you tow me to a shop in Raleigh or Apex?

Yes. Cary to anywhere in the Triangle is a normal run, and longer trips — Greensboro, Charlotte, the coast — are quoted the same upfront way through our long-distance towing service.

We’re a 24-hour operation, and holidays don’t change that. Whether it’s a dead battery in a driveway in Preston at 7 a.m. Monday, a flat on NC-540 Sunday night, or a car in a ditch off Green Level Church Road after a storm, a WTF Towing truck rolls. You’ll get a real price and a real ETA when you call, not a “someone will be in touch.”

The five-minute pre-trip check that prevents most holiday breakdowns

The calls we get on holiday weekends follow a pattern, and most of them are preventable in the driveway before you leave:

• Battery. If your car has cranked slowly even once this summer, get it tested before a long drive. Heat kills batteries faster than cold does, and a battery that barely starts the car in a Cary parking lot at 90 degrees will not start it at a rest stop. We do jump starts all over Cary, but nobody wants to need one at a gas station in Smithfield.
• Tires. Check the pressure on all four and the spare, and look at the tread. Under-inflated tires on hot pavement at highway speed are how blowouts happen. If you don’t have a spare, know that before you leave, not after. (We handle tire changes and will tow you to a tire shop if there’s no spare to put on.)
• Coolant and oil. Stop-and-go beach traffic on a hot afternoon is the hardest thing you’ll ask of your engine all year. A quick look at the coolant reservoir and the oil level takes two minutes.
• Fuel. Fill up in Cary before you get on I-40. Gas stations get slammed on holiday weekends and prices climb the closer you get to the coast. Running dry on NC-55 with a car full of kids is a bad way to start a long weekend. (Yes, we deliver fuel if it happens anyway.)
• Keys. Put a spare key with someone who isn’t riding with you. Lockouts spike on holiday weekends because people are juggling coolers, kids, and bags in unfamiliar parking lots. We do car lockouts, but a spare key is faster and free.

Where Cary drivers get stuck on holiday weekends

A few spots come up over and over in our dispatch log around Labor Day:

• I-40 between Cary and the Wade Avenue split. Heavy eastbound traffic Friday and Saturday, heavy westbound Monday afternoon. If you break down here, get all the way onto the shoulder, put your hazards on, and stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on. Do not stand behind the car.
• US-64 heading east toward the coast. Long stretches with limited exits. Overheating and tire failures are the usual calls.
• NC-540 (the Triangle Expressway). Fast, with narrow shoulders in places. Pull as far right as you can and call from inside the car.
• Shopping and cookout traffic in town. Crossroads Plaza, Fenton, Park West Village, and the grocery lots along Cary Parkway and Tryon Road fill up all weekend. Lockouts and dead batteries in parking lots are the number one holiday call.

If you do break down: what to do before we get there

1. Get safe first. Off the road as far as you can, hazards on, seatbelts on if you’re staying in the car. On an interstate, stay in the vehicle. In a parking lot or on a neighborhood street, it’s fine to wait outside.
2. Know where you are. A cross street, an exit number, a business name, or a dropped pin from your phone. “Somewhere on I-40” costs you time.
3. Call (919) 230-4498. Tell us what the car is doing, what kind of vehicle it is, and where you want it to go. If you don’t know where to take it, we’ll tell you what your options are.
4. Move over for the people who show up to help. North Carolina’s Move Over law covers tow trucks. When you see amber lights on the shoulder, slow down and change lanes if you can. Our drivers are working feet from traffic.

Electric cars, AWD, and lowered cars: ask for a flatbed

Here’s what the holidays actually do to cars around the Triangle, the calls we get most between the two holidays, and how to make sure your December driving stays boring.

The December calls, in order

• Dead batteries. By far the most common. Cold mornings, short trips that never fully recharge the battery, and interior lights left on while unloading packages. If your car cranks slowly on a cold morning, that’s the warning; get the battery tested before it strands you. Our jump-start service gets you going and tells you honestly whether the battery is done.
• Lockouts. The holiday version: keys on the seat, hands full, door swings shut. The Park West Village, Waverly Place and Crossroads lots keep us busy the week before Christmas. A lockout is minutes, no damage.
• Flats. Cold drops tire pressure; a tire that was borderline in November is low in December. Add the curb at a packed parking lot and you’ve got a sidewall cut.
• Crashes. Parking-lot bumps at the shopping centers, and rear-end collisions in the rain on Cary Parkway and US-1. If there’s visible damage, take the tow — a bent part you can’t see is how a small crash becomes a big one.
• Ice. Not every year, but when it comes, the bridges freeze first: Davis Drive over I-40, the ramps at US-1 and Tryon Road, the overpasses on NC-540. We’ll do a full winter post on it; the short version is slow down before the bridge, not on it.

Five minutes that save Christmas morning

2. Battery tested if it’s over four years old or cranks slowly.

The two jobs a tow truck does

Every tow truck does one of two things: it lifts one end of your vehicle and lets the other end roll (a wheel-lift or wrecker), or it carries the whole vehicle on a bed (a flatbed, also called a rollback or carrier). Everything else — light, medium, heavy duty; integrated; rotator — is a variation on those two ideas, scaled up for bigger loads.

Which one you need comes down to a simple question: can two of your wheels safely roll on the road for the length of the trip? For a front-wheel-drive sedan going three miles to a shop, yes. For an EV, an AWD vehicle, a car with a bent wheel, or anything going to Charlotte, no.

Wheel-lift wreckers

A wheel-lift truck slides a steel yoke under the front (or rear) tires, cradles them, and lifts that end of the car off the ground. The other two wheels roll. It’s fast — a hookup on a highway shoulder takes minutes, which matters when traffic is going by at 65 — and the truck itself is shorter and more maneuverable than a flatbed, so it fits in parking decks, apartment lots and narrow neighborhood streets where a 21-foot bed can’t turn around.

Best for: front- or rear-wheel-drive cars and light trucks with no drivetrain damage, short trips, tight spaces, and vehicles that need to be pulled out of a spot before they can be loaded onto anything. Our Ram 5500 wrecker with a Jerr-Dan wheel-lift handles most of these calls in Cary, and it’s also the truck that does winch-outs and recoveries.

Not for: all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles (unless the driveshaft is disconnected or dollies are used under the rolling wheels), electric vehicles, and long-distance runs.

Flatbed rollback carriers

A rollback tilts its bed to the ground, winches the vehicle up onto it, and carries it with all four wheels off the road. Nothing on your car turns, so nothing wears or breaks: no transmission spinning without lubrication, no EV motor generating current it isn’t designed to handle, no bent suspension part dragging.

Best for: AWD and 4WD vehicles, electric and hybrid vehicles, lowered or low-clearance cars, vehicles with crash damage or a wheel that no longer points straight, motorcycles (with the right straps), and any long-distance move. WTF Towing runs two Isuzu NRR rollbacks with 21-foot Jerr-Dan beds; they cover everything from a Tesla in an RTP garage to a long-distance tow to the coast.

The trade-off: a rollback needs room. It’s long, and it needs a straight run to lower the bed and load. In a packed deck or a dead-end cul-de-sac, the wheel-lift often has to pull the car to a spot where the rollback can reach it — which is why telling us where the car is sitting matters as much as what it is.

Duty classes: light, medium, heavy

“Light duty,” “medium duty” and “heavy duty” describe the size of vehicle a truck is built to handle, and they follow the same weight classes the trucking industry uses.

• Light duty covers passenger cars, SUVs, minivans and pickups — roughly anything rated under 10,000 pounds. This is most of the traffic in Cary and most of our calls.
• Medium duty covers box trucks, delivery vans, shuttle buses, small dump trucks and equipment — generally the 10,000-to-26,000-pound range. Our trucks are built on Class 5 chassis and handle medium-duty work in that range; tell us the vehicle and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a fit.
• Heavy duty means tractor-trailers, loaded dump trucks, motor coaches and fire apparatus, which need a purpose-built heavy wrecker or a rotator. We don’t run heavy-duty rigs; if that’s what you need, we’ll say so on the phone rather than send the wrong truck.

“Towing capacity” is the number behind those classes: how much a given truck can safely lift and pull. Overloading a tow truck isn’t just illegal — it’s how brakes fade going down the hill on US-1 at Tryon Road. When you give us the year, make and model, the dispatcher is checking that match before the truck rolls.

Other trucks you’ll see on the road

Integrated wreckers combine the boom and wheel-lift into one heavy-duty unit for big recoveries. Rotators are heavy wreckers with a crane that rotates, used to right overturned trucks on I-40. Hook-and-chain trucks, the kind in old movies, are essentially gone from professional fleets because they damage bumpers and frames; if someone shows up with chains around your axle, send them away. And dollies — small wheeled cradles that go under a car’s rolling axle — let a wheel-lift move an AWD car in a pinch when a rollback can’t reach it.

Which truck your vehicle needs

1. Front-wheel-drive car, drivable damage, short trip: wheel-lift. Fast and less expensive.
2. Rear-wheel-drive car or truck: wheel-lift from the rear, or a rollback — depends on where it’s sitting.
3. AWD, 4WD, Subaru, Audi Quattro, most modern SUVs: rollback. Say “all-wheel drive” on the phone and the right truck comes the first time.
4. Tesla, Rivian, any EV or plug-in hybrid: rollback, always. Read why AWD vehicles need the right truck — the same logic applies to EVs.
5. Lowered, sports or classic car: rollback, with the driver taking care on the bed angle.
6. Crash damage, a wheel that’s pointing the wrong way, a leaking fluid: rollback.
7. Stuck off the pavement: the wrecker first for the winch-out, then whichever truck the trip needs.
8. Box truck, van, fleet vehicle, small equipment: medium duty — tell us the weight or the model.
9. Anything going out of town: rollback.

What to tell us so the right truck comes

Year, make and model; whether it’s AWD, 4WD or electric; what happened (won’t start, flat, crash, stuck); exactly where it is, including “parking deck level 3” or “backed into a spot against a wall”; and where it’s going. That’s a two-minute call, and it’s the difference between one truck and two. You’ll get the price before we roll, and it’s the price you pay. Common questions

Does a flatbed cost more than a wheel-lift?

Sometimes, because it’s a bigger truck and a longer hookup — but if your vehicle needs a flatbed, a wheel-lift isn’t a cheaper option, it’s a damaged drivetrain. We’ll tell you which one your car needs and quote that.

Can you tow my AWD car if the rollback can’t reach it?

Usually. The wrecker pulls it to where the rollback can load, or uses dollies for a short move. Tell us the situation and we’ll plan it.

Do you tow motorcycles?

Yes, on the rollback with proper wheel chocks and soft straps. Tell us the bike when you call.

Do you handle semis or heavy equipment?
