When a Cary tow turns into a long-distance run

Most of what we do is towing in Cary, NC, Morrisville and Apex: short hops from a driveway off Kildaire Farm Road or a lot at Crossroads Plaza to a shop a few miles away. For that you want a tow truck near you in Cary, fast. A long-distance run is a different job: the truck is gone for most of a day, the car rides for hours at highway speed, and the drop-off end matters as much as the pickup.

The calls usually sound like one of these: a car that died on I-40 or at RDU whose owner lives in Charlotte or the Triad and wants their own mechanic to fix it; a student’s car headed to Wilmington, Greensboro or Boone; a car bought online that is sitting in the Triangle and cannot be driven; a classic going to a specialty shop; an EV with a dead pack going to a service center that can handle it. Our rule of thumb: past Raleigh, Durham or Apex, it is a long-distance quote. The long-distance towing page covers the service itself.

For any of these the car goes on one of our two Isuzu NRR rollbacks with 21-foot Jerr-Dan beds, not the Ram 5500 wheel-lift wrecker. On a wheel-lift two of your wheels are still turning on the pavement: fine for three miles down Tryon Road, a bad idea for three hours on I-85, and a hard no for all-wheel-drive and most electric vehicles (here is why EVs need a flatbed). Cary to Greensboro: the short one

About 70 miles. The run is I-40 West out of Cary, through Durham, then the stretch where I-40 and I-85 share the road from Hillsborough through Mebane and Burlington into Greensboro. A rollback can do it there and back in an afternoon, so Greensboro is the run we can most often fit in the same day you call.

What slows it down is the Durham stretch of I-40 between NC-147 and US-15-501 at rush hour, and the I-40/I-85 merge near Hillsborough. A pickup in RTP, at RDU or in Durham is on the way; see our Durham towing and RDU Airport towing pages.

Cary to Charlotte: the long one

About 160 miles. The normal route is I-40 West to Greensboro, then I-85 South through Lexington, Salisbury, Kannapolis and Concord into Charlotte. When I-85 is backed up, US-64 West through Pittsboro and Asheboro and then NC-49 is the slower but steadier fallback.

Two and a half hours in a car is more than that in a loaded carrier, and the round trip is most of a driver’s day, so Charlotte runs are usually scheduled rather than dispatched: same day when a rollback is free and you call early, otherwise a set pickup window. Charlotte traffic on I-85, I-485 and I-77 at the end is the part nobody controls, so for a late-day arrival we quote a delivery window rather than an hour, and we need the receiving shop’s hours before the truck leaves.

Cary to Wilmington: the coast run

About 140 miles. I-40 East through Raleigh, past the I-95 interchange near Benson, then the long straight stretch through Johnston, Sampson, Duplin and Pender counties until I-40 ends at Wilmington. Two hours in a car on a quiet Tuesday; on a summer Friday afternoon or a Sunday evening it is beach traffic the whole way, and the last leg to Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Leland or Hampstead adds more.

Wilmington runs come in two flavors: the college car or beach-house car scheduled a week out, and the breakdown in reverse, a Cary family whose car quit at the coast and who want it towed home to their own mechanic. From June through November, if a tropical system is in the forecast for the coast, expect a call about moving the run.

Beyond those three, we run to Asheville, Fayetteville, Greenville, the Outer Banks, and across the line into Virginia and South Carolina. We are an interstate motor carrier, USDOT 4241594 and MC 1642674, with $1,000,000 in liability coverage, so a state line is a normal part of the trip.

What the driver does on a long run

Before the truck leaves Morrisville, the driver confirms the car rolls, steers and fits: length, ground clearance, a front lip or a lift kit, oversized tires, and whether an EV needs transport mode. That phone call is where most long-distance problems get solved; a surprise at pickup can cost an hour.

At pickup he walks around the car with you and photographs every panel, the odometer and the interior, so both of you have a record before it moves. He loads with the bed angled as low as it goes, wood blocks under the lip for anything lowered, positions the car over the axle so the truck rides balanced, and straps all four wheels with ratchet straps rather than chains through the suspension. A few miles out he checks the straps again, because they settle once the load starts moving, then every couple of hours after that.

At delivery he unloads, photographs the car again, hands the keys to the person you named and calls you to confirm. If nobody can be there, he leaves it where you said and texts you the photos. If the car will not roll at all, say so when you call; the rollback’s winch handles it, and our winching page explains how.

What sets the price, and how to book

We quote one price for the whole trip, up front, not a per-mile number that grows on the invoice. What moves that number is mostly time, and the biggest piece is one most people forget: your one-way tow is a round trip for the truck, because the carrier drives back to Cary empty. After that: route time rather than raw miles, since 140 miles on a quiet weekday and 140 miles into Friday beach traffic are not the same job; whether the car rolls and steers; a pickup spot that turns a ten-minute load into a winch job; same-day, overnight or weekend timing versus a window next Tuesday; tolls on NC-540 or Charlotte’s express lanes; and waiting at delivery if the receiving end is closed. 2. Describe what is around the car. A rollback needs about 60 feet of straight room to load; if that is not there, we meet you at the street.
3. Give us the receiving contact’s name and number, any gate code, and the hours the shop or lot is open.
4. Pick same-day or a pickup window. For runs over about four hours we quote a delivery window instead of a clock time.
5. Empty the car of anything loose or heavy, take your own photos, and note the odometer.
6. Have the keys ready, or tell us there are none. For an EV, put it in transport mode if you know how; if not, the driver will.
7. Tell the receiving end the car is coming and roughly when.
8. Keep your phone on. The driver calls at pickup and again at drop-off.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tow my car from Cary to Charlotte the same day?

Often, yes, if a rollback is free and you call early; the round trip takes most of a driver’s shift. If both carriers are committed, we give you a pickup window and stick to it. Greensboro is the easiest to fit in same-day; book Charlotte and Wilmington ahead when you can.

Do you tow out of state?

Yes. Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and up the East Coast are all runs we make. As an interstate carrier with an active USDOT and MC number, crossing the line is routine.

Is long-distance towing priced per mile?

No. You get one price for the trip before the truck rolls. Distance is part of it, but so are the empty return leg, the vehicle, the pickup conditions, the schedule and any tolls. A flat quote from the company that owns the truck beats a per-mile number from a broker who still has to find one.

Does my car need to run?

No. It needs to roll and steer for a quick load; if it does neither, say so when you call so the driver plans the winch. No keys, a locked steering column or seized brakes can all still go on the carrier; it just takes longer.

We’ve already posted a photo tour of the trucks on real calls. This is the spec sheet: what each truck does, where it fits on Cary roads, and how to make sure the right one is sent to you.

The WTF Towing fleet at a glance

• The Ram 5500 wrecker. A four-door Ram 5500 chassis cab with dual rear wheels, a Jerr-Dan wheel-lift and a winch. It lifts one end of a vehicle and rolls it on the other two wheels.
• The two Isuzu NRR rollbacks. Low-cab-forward flatbed carriers, each with a 21-foot Jerr-Dan bed that tilts and slides to the ground and a winch at the head of the bed. They carry the whole vehicle, all four wheels off the road.

Ram and Isuzu build the trucks. Jerr-Dan builds the towing equipment, the part that actually touches your car.

Both chassis are Class 5, the federal weight class for trucks rated at 16,001 to 19,500 pounds fully loaded. For scale, the 5500 is the heaviest chassis cab Ram builds, two classes above a one-ton pickup.

That matters because full-size pickups, three-row SUVs and EVs weigh more than they look, and a truck built for that weight stops and steers the way it should with one on the back.

The class isn’t a lifting or carrying number; that depends on how each truck is equipped and how the load sits. Tell us the vehicle and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a fit.

The Ram 5500 wrecker: the quick-hookup truck

The wheel-lift is a steel crossbar that slides under one end of the car, with arms that close around the tires. It holds the car by its tires, not the bumper or frame.

The driver walks around the car, lifts that end just clear of the road, straps the wheels to the lift, and checks that the wheels still on the ground roll free before pulling away.

What it’s built for:

• Fast hookups. On the shoulder of US-1 or I-40, a shorter hookup means less time standing next to traffic.
• Tight places. It’s shorter than a rollback and needs no room to slide out a bed. That suits the packed rows at Crossroads Plaza and Park West Village, apartment lots, and parking decks where the posted clearance allows.
• Recoveries. The winch pulls a car out of a ditch, a wet yard or off a curb while the truck stays on firm ground. That’s our winch-out service.
• Roadside calls. It carries the jacks and tools for tire changes, and it handles jump starts and lockouts.

It isn’t the truck for all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles, EVs and plug-in hybrids, lowered cars or long trips; those ride on a rollback. Towed with two wheels on the road, an all-wheel-drive car or an EV can damage its drivetrain, and a lowered car can scrape once one end is lifted.

The exception is a short move out of a tight spot, with dollies under the other end so no wheel turns on the pavement.

The two Isuzu NRR rollbacks: our flatbeds

The bed tilts and slides back until its tail rests on the ground. The driver winches the vehicle up by its tow point and ties it down at all four corners before the truck moves. Nothing on your car turns on the way to the shop.

The NRR is a low-cab-forward truck: the cab sits over the front axle instead of behind a long hood. More of the truck’s length goes to the bed, the driver sees the road right in front of the bumper, and it turns tighter than its length suggests. That’s how a 21-foot bed gets into Cary cul-de-sacs and driveways.

A 21-foot deck has room for a full-size crew-cab pickup. An F-150, an F-250 and a Chevy Avalanche have all ridden on these beds. So have a classic Mustang, a Porsche Cayenne and a lifted off-road SUV.

What goes on a rollback:

• All-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles.
• Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
• Lowered, sports and classic cars.
• Anything with crash damage, or a wheel that won’t roll or steer.
• Motorcycles, with wheel chocks and soft straps.
• Anything leaving town: long-distance towing to Charlotte, Greensboro or Wilmington always rides on a bed.

The rollbacks do most of our towing, and with two, one can be out on a long run while the other stays in Cary.

The trade-off is room. A rollback needs a straight run to slide its bed down and load, and many parking decks won’t take a truck this long and tall. There, the Ram makes the first move if the clearance allows.

Which truck comes to which call

Dispatch matches the truck to the vehicle and to the spot it’s sitting in. Typical pairings around town:

• Front-wheel-drive sedan dead on US-1 near Cary Parkway (Exit 99): the wrecker, for a fast hookup and a short tow to the shop of your choice.
• All-wheel-drive SUV that won’t start in a parking deck at Fenton or in downtown Cary: read us the clearance posted at the entrance. Where the wrecker fits, it brings the car out on the wheel-lift and dollies, and a rollback carries it from there.
• EV that won’t move in an RTP parking lot: a rollback, always.
• Pickup off the shoulder on Green Level Church Road or NC-55 after a rain: the wrecker’s winch if it can drive away afterward; a rollback, which winches it straight onto the bed, if it can’t.

The limits belong on the spec sheet too. We don’t run heavy-duty rigs, so tractor-trailers, loaded dump trucks and motor coaches aren’t ours to tow. Vans, box trucks and work trucks are case by case, by weight and load. Our guide to tow truck types and towing capacity explains the duty classes.

How to get the right truck sent the first time

1. Get safe first. On US-1, I-40 or NC-540, hazards on and stay belted unless you can get well clear of traffic. If any part of the car is in a lane, call 911 first.
2. Call (919) 230-4498 and say exactly where the car is. The road and direction, the nearest exit, or the store you’re parked by. In a parking deck, the level and the clearance posted at the entrance.
3. Give the year, make, model and drivetrain. Say “all-wheel drive,” “four-wheel drive,” “electric” or “hybrid” up front. It decides the truck.
4. Say how it sits. Lowered, lifted, crash-damaged, a wheel that won’t roll, or off the pavement.
5. Say what still works. Does it start, shift into neutral and steer? Do you have the key or fob?
6. Say where it’s going. Home, the shop of your choice, or out of town.
7. Count the riders. Tell us how many people need a ride.
8. For a van or work truck, read us the GVWR. It’s on the sticker in the driver’s door jamb. Say what’s loaded in it.

The misses that send the wrong truck:

• Calling it “a small SUV” and leaving out the all-wheel drive.
• Not mentioning the parking deck until the truck is at the entrance.
• Guessing at the weight of a loaded van or box truck.

What decides the price

We quote the job on the phone before the truck rolls. What moves the number:

• Which truck the job needs. A wheel-lift tow and a rollback tow are different jobs, and some calls need both trucks.
• Distance. How far the truck runs to reach you, and how far the vehicle is going.
• Where the vehicle sits. A level lot is quick. A low deck, a ditch or a car that won’t roll takes more rigging and time.

Will my full-size pickup fit on the rollback?

Here’s how to tell which option is yours, what our driver does, and when a flat becomes a tow. The short version is on our flat tire change service in Cary page.

Spare, donut, run-flat or kit: know which one you have

Lift the cargo floor before you need to. Your car has one of four setups.

• A full-size spare. Common on pickups and larger SUVs, often hung underneath and lowered with a crank. Once it’s on and holding air, you drive normally.
• A compact “donut” spare. Narrower than your other tires and strictly temporary. The speed limit is printed on it, usually 50 mph, and it’s meant to go only as far as a tire shop. Most call for 60 psi, and they lose air sitting in the trunk.
• No spare, because the car rides on run-flats. BMW and Mini have fitted them for years, as have many Mercedes-Benz models. Look on the sidewall for a code such as RFT, ROF, ZP, SSR, DSST, EMT or MOE, or the words “Run Flat.”
• A sealant kit, or nothing. Many newer cars carry a bottle of sealant and a small compressor where the spare used to be. Most EVs have no spare either.

With a spare: what our driver does on a tire change

You don’t need your own jack. Our Ram 5500 wrecker carries the jacks and breaker bar for full-size pickups and lifted SUVs. What the car has to supply: the spare, the tool that lowers it if it hangs underneath, and the wheel-lock key.

On a shoulder, the truck parks behind your car with its lights on and the cones go out. The driver checks the ground first. On a soft or sloped shoulder the jack sits on a plate or the car moves a few feet, because a jack sinking into wet grass is how cars fall off jacks.

Then the work: lug nuts broken loose with the wheel on the ground, the car lifted at the maker’s jack point, the spare on, and the lugs tightened in a star pattern with a torque wrench. He checks the spare’s pressure before you drive on it.

On a donut, stay off the highway if you can: from the Crossroads Plaza lot, that means Walnut Street, not US-1. On an all-wheel-drive car the mismatched tire can strain the drivetrain the whole time it’s on, so keep the trip short and get the real tire fixed within a day or two.

On run-flats: how far you can really go

A run-flat has sidewalls stiff enough to carry the car with no air inside. That makes a flat hard to feel, so the tire-pressure light is often your only warning. When it comes on, believe it.

The usual limit is about 50 miles at no more than 50 mph, less with a loaded car; your owner’s manual has the exact figure. That reaches any tire shop in Cary, Apex or Morrisville from anywhere in town. It doesn’t reach Charlotte or the beach.

On US-1, move to the right lane, slow down, turn the hazards on and take the next exit: Exit 101 at Walnut Street, Exit 99 at Cary Parkway or Exit 98A at Tryon Road. Finish the trip on surface streets.

Run-flats still end up on our trucks. Stop and call for a tow when:

• the sidewall is cut or the tire is coming apart;
• the wheel is bent from a pothole or a curb;
• the car shakes, pulls or smells of hot rubber;
• you don’t know how long the light has been on.

If no shop is open, a run-flat that’s still in one piece can usually get you home at low speed; tomorrow’s miles count against the same limit. Plan on buying a tire: many shops won’t repair a run-flat that’s been driven flat.

No spare, or one you can’t use: when a flat becomes a tow

A sealant kit handles one kind of flat: a small puncture in the tread. It won’t seal a sidewall cut, a blowout or a tire that has come off the rim, and the sealant can foul the pressure sensor inside the wheel. If you use it, tell the tire shop.

These are the calls where we skip the jack and send a truck to tow:

• no spare and no run-flats;
• a spare that’s flat, cracked with age or won’t come down from under the truck;
• a bent or cracked wheel;
• two flats at once, the kind a pothole or debris on I-40 leaves;
• a missing wheel-lock key.

What to do when you get a flat in Cary

1. Get out of traffic. Ease off the gas, don’t brake hard, and steer for an exit ramp, a parking lot or the widest, most level shoulder you can reach.
2. Don’t keep driving on a regular tire that’s flat. A slow crawl along the shoulder to a safe spot is fine. Past that, the rim chews up the tire and the road chews up the rim.
3. Hazards on, seatbelt on. On US-1, I-40 or NC-540, stay in the car if all of it is past the white line. If any part is in a lane, call 911 first. Get everyone out on the side away from traffic and behind the guardrail if you can do it safely; if you can’t, stay belted.
4. Check what you have. Spare, donut, run-flats or a kit, and the wheel-lock key: glove box, console or trunk tool kit. On a highway shoulder, skip this and stay belted; the driver will look.
5. Call (919) 230-4498. Give us the road and direction, and the nearest exit or the store you’re parked by.
6. Describe the car and the tire. Year, make and model; all-wheel drive, electric, lowered or lifted; which tire is flat; whether the wheel looks bent, if you can tell.
7. Pick the destination if it needs a tow. Call the tire shop first to confirm it’s open and has your size. Run-flat and EV tires aren’t always on the shelf.

What decides the price, and the mistakes that raise it

We quote the job on the phone before the truck rolls. What moves the number:

• Tire change or tow. A tire change is a service call. A tow adds the mileage to the shop.
• Distance. How far the truck runs to reach you and, for a tow, how far the car is going.
• Where the car sits. A level lot is quick. A soft shoulder, a low deck or a car that left the pavement in a blowout takes more work, sometimes a winch-out first.

The mistakes that make a flat expensive:

• Changing a tire on the traffic side of a highway shoulder.
• Jacking on the rocker trim or the floor. On an EV, the floor is the battery.
• Leaving a donut on for a week.

Tire change questions

Can you plug or patch my tire on the roadside?

No. Plugs and patches are a tire shop’s job. We put your spare on or tow the car, and the driver will tell you if the hole looks like one a shop can fix.

What if I get a flat in a parking deck at Fenton or RDU?

A deck is one of the easier places for a tire change: level concrete and no fast traffic. Tell us the level and the nearest stairwell. If the car has to be towed, read us the clearance posted at the entrance so the right truck comes.

I have run-flats and the light just came on. Should I call?

Check whether it’s a flat first. On the first cold mornings of fall the light often comes on because pressure drops with the temperature. Put a gauge on all four tires: one far below the rest is your flat. If it looks intact, drive slowly to a shop. If the sidewall is damaged, stop and call.

Here’s why that is, how our driver loads an EV that won’t even power on, and what to have ready when you call.

Why an EV can’t be towed like a gas car

Put a gas car in neutral and the engine lets go of the wheels. Lift the drive wheels, let the other two roll, and nothing inside is harmed. That’s how our Ram 5500 wrecker and its wheel-lift move most front- and rear-wheel-drive cars.

Most EVs have no neutral like that. Each motor is geared straight to its wheels, so when the wheels turn, the motor turns and makes electricity. Tesla’s Model Y manual puts it in one line: “The motors in Model Y generate power when the wheels spin.” Tesla warns of significant damage and overheating. Rivian’s tow operator guide says flatbed only and adds that extreme overheating can cause a fire.

On a dual-motor EV there’s no safe end to lift, because both axles are driven. A flatbed is the one method every maker approves, and it’s the only way we tow them. Our guide to tow truck types and which truck your car needs covers every other kind of vehicle.

Why EVs end up on a tow truck in Cary

It’s usually not the big battery failing. The common reasons are ordinary:

• A dead low-voltage battery. Every EV also has a small battery, 12 volts in most cars, that runs the computers and the switches that connect the main pack. When it dies, the car is a brick even at full charge. A week parked in a deck at RDU can do it. A jump start on the low-voltage side often wakes it up; our post on dead batteries at Crossroads Plaza covers what our driver checks.
• Out of charge. A cold morning, a detour around a wreck on I-40, a charger that’s out of order. The car warns you, cuts power, then stops. The main battery can’t be jump-started; the fix is a flatbed ride to a charger.
• A flat and no spare. Many EVs ship without a spare. If the tire can’t be sealed or a pothole bent the wheel, it’s a tow to a tire shop. With a spare, it’s a tire change, not a tow.
• A drive-system warning. “Pull over safely,” reduced power, or a car that won’t shift into Drive.
• A crash, or a hard hit underneath. The battery pack is the floor of the car. After either one, it gets towed and inspected, not driven.

Where it happens matters too. On US-1, reaching Exit 101 at Walnut Street, Exit 99 at Cary Parkway or Exit 98A at Tryon Road beats stopping on the shoulder. On NC-540 and I-40 through RTP, the shoulder is no place to troubleshoot; our I-40 and I-440 breakdown checklist covers what to do.

Plenty of EVs also go quiet right where they’re parked: the decks at Fenton and in downtown Cary, an office deck in RTP, a driveway off Green Level Church Road.

What our driver does to load an EV

The rollback lines up with the car and its 21-foot Jerr-Dan bed tilts down to the pavement. What happens next depends on whether the car will wake up.

If it powers on, the driver puts it in the maker’s towing setting so the wheels roll free and the parking brake stays off. On a Tesla that’s Tow Mode, which older manuals call Transport Mode. On a Rivian it’s a park-brake release in the service menu that shuts itself off after 15 minutes, so it gets switched on right before the pull.

The winch line goes to the screw-in tow eye that came with the car, never to a suspension arm or anything under the floor. The car comes up the bed at a crawl, the only time its wheels turn. Tesla’s manual allows that at under 5 mph for less than 30 feet, which is all a 21-foot bed needs.

If it’s dead, the driver boosts the low-voltage battery first, which is often enough to wake the screen and release the brake. If not, skates go under the locked wheels and the car slides up the bed. That’s the method Tesla’s own instructions give.

On the bed, the car goes into Park and the tires are strapped down at all four corners. Nothing goes through the wheels, around the suspension or over the body; you can see those straps in our photo tour of the trucks. Send the key card or fob with the car, because it has to wake up again to roll off.

Decks and garages change the job. A rollback is long and tall, and many parking decks won’t take it. There our Ram 5500 wrecker goes in first: one end of the car on the wheel-lift, dollies under the other, all four wheels still off the ground, out to where the rollback can load. In a home garage with the wheels locked, it’s skates and patience.

What to do when your EV quits

1. Use the last of the power to get out of traffic. An EV that’s running low slows down before it stops. Take the next exit or parking lot; don’t stretch for a charger.
2. Turn the hazards on. On a highway, if the whole car is past the white line and nothing is smoking, stay in it, belted. If it’s partly in a lane, get everyone out and behind the guardrail.
3. Smoke, a sharp chemical smell, or popping or hissing under the car? Get everyone well back and call 911 before you call us.
4. Don’t let anyone pull it. No tow strap behind a friend’s truck, and no wheels-down tow “just to the charger.”
5. Call (919) 230-4498 and say “electric.” That one word decides which truck leaves.
6. Have the details ready: year, make and model; single or dual motor; whether the screen comes on and what it says; state of charge; any crash damage; and exactly where the car is, down to the deck level or nearest exit.
7. Find the tow eye and the key card. The tow eye is usually in the front trunk or under the cargo floor.
8. Pick the destination: your home charger, a public fast charger, or the service center or shop of your choice. Confirm the shop works on EVs before we load.

Mistakes that cost EV owners money

• Not saying it’s electric. The wrong truck shows up and you wait for a second one.
• Agreeing to a wheels-down tow because it’s “only two miles.” The makers’ warnings don’t come with a safe distance.
• Restarting the car over and over after a drive-system warning. Write down what the screen says and leave it alone.
• Putting a crash-damaged EV in the garage. Federal guidance for tow operators says a severely damaged EV shouldn’t be stored inside a structure or within 50 feet of a structure or another vehicle. At home, that means outside, away from the house, until it’s inspected. Don’t charge it, either.

What EV towing costs: the factors

No two EV tows are the same job. What moves the number:

• Distance. Usually the biggest factor, and an EV may have to go farther because not every shop works on them. A run to the shop or service center of your choice in Raleigh or Durham is a normal job; a long-distance tow is quoted on its own.
• Whether it rolls. An EV that wakes up and rolls loads like any other car. Locked wheels mean skates and more time.
• Where it’s sitting. A deck or tight garage can put both trucks on the job. A car that’s off the pavement needs a winch-out first.

The truck isn’t a choice: an EV rides the flatbed either way, so there’s no cheaper wheel-lift option to weigh. EV towing questions

Can an EV be towed a short distance with two wheels on the ground?

Not by us. Tesla requires all four wheels off the ground and Rivian’s guide says flatbed only. The one exception is the slow, short roll onto the bed.

My EV is completely dead and stuck in Park. Can you still move it?

Yes. The driver boosts the low-voltage battery first. If the brake still won’t release, the car slides onto the bed on skates.

Do hybrids and plug-in hybrids need a flatbed too?

We send the rollback for them. Many are all-wheel drive, and a flatbed is safe for every drivetrain.

One note up front: this is general information from a towing company, not legal advice.

The first ten minutes: safety, then 911

Check yourself and your passengers first. If anyone is hurt, or you aren’t sure, call 911 and say so.

If nobody is hurt and the cars still drive, North Carolina law expects you to get them out of the travel lane and onto the shoulder or a nearby lot as soon as you safely can. That matters most on US-1 and US-64 through the Crossroads area and on I-40, where a stopped car in a live lane is how one crash becomes two. On Cary Parkway, Kildaire Farm Rd or Tryon Rd, the nearest shopping-center entrance beats the middle of the road.

If the car won’t move, turn on the hazards, and get everyone out and well away from traffic if you can do it safely: behind the guardrail on a highway, up on the sidewalk or grass in town. The police report: when you need one and how to get a copy

In North Carolina, a driver in a “reportable” crash has to notify law enforcement right away. Reportable means someone was injured or killed, or the property damage adds up to $1,000 or more. When in doubt, call.

Inside town limits, Cary Police respond; on the interstates it is often the State Highway Patrol. Whoever shows up, do two things:

• Get the report number and the officer’s name before you leave the scene.
• Ask how to get the report. Officers write the report after the crash and it usually takes a day or two to reach the records office. For reportable crashes, copies come through the NC Division of Motor Vehicles, which charges a fee; the Cary Police Records Unit can point you the right way for a Cary crash.

What to do at the scene, in order

1. Get safe. Hazards on, people out of traffic, cars out of the lane if they’ll drive.
2. Call 911. Give the road, the direction you were heading and the nearest cross street or exit. On US-1 in Cary, that might be “southbound near Exit 101, Walnut Street.”
3. Exchange information. Name, phone, driver’s license, plate number, and insurance company and policy number for every driver involved.
4. Take photos. All four sides of every vehicle, the plates, the position of the cars before they’re moved if it’s safe to shoot, skid marks, debris, and the intersection or mile marker.
5. Decide where the car is going. Home, a body shop you trust, or a storage yard. Have an answer before the tow truck is hooked up.
6. Call for the tow. Tell the officer you have a truck on the way.
7. Empty the car. Wallet, phone, house keys, garage-door opener, medication, child seats.
8. Call your insurance company and open the claim, from the scene if you can.

The tow: who calls it, which truck comes, what the driver does

If your car can’t be driven, somebody has to move it, and you generally have a say in who. Tell the officer you’d like to call your own tow company. If you don’t have a preference, can’t make the call, or the car is blocking a lane and has to go immediately, the officer will call the next company on the agency’s rotation list. Either way, ask where the car is being taken and get the tow company’s name and phone number before it leaves. When you call us, have four answers ready: exactly where the car is (in the road, on the shoulder, or off in a ditch), whether all four wheels roll and steer, whether it’s all-wheel drive, an EV or a hybrid, and where it’s going. That’s how the right truck leaves the yard.

Most wrecked vehicles ride on a flatbed. A car with a broken suspension, a locked wheel or drivetrain damage shouldn’t be dragged down the road on its own tires, so one of our Isuzu rollback carriers tilts its 21-foot Jerr-Dan bed to the ground and winches the car up. If a wheel won’t turn, the driver uses skates or blocks under it so the car slides onto the bed instead of grinding. Then it’s strapped at four points and the bed levels out.

When the car is somewhere a rollback can’t line up on, like a tight corner of a parking deck or wedged against a curb, our Ram 5500 wrecker with the Jerr-Dan wheel-lift can pull it into the open first. If it left the pavement, that’s a winch-out before it’s a tow.

The driver also picks up the bumper covers and big debris, and you get a receipt showing where the car went. Keep it; your adjuster will ask for it.

Insurance and storage: the calls to make, and why days matter

Call your own insurance company the same day, even if the other driver was clearly at fault. You’ll get a claim number, and every shop, yard and adjuster will ask for it from here on. On that first call, ask:

• Is the tow from the scene covered, and do I pay and submit the receipt or do you handle it?
• Where do you want the car inspected: at the shop I choose, or somewhere else?
• Is storage covered, and for how many days?

If you have an insurance roadside plan, it may send a truck for you. If the wait is long and you’re on the shoulder of US-1 at rush hour, you can call a local company directly and ask your insurer how reimbursement works.

If you don’t know where the car should go, or the shop is closed for the night, it goes to a storage yard. Nearly every yard bills storage by the day, and the bill grows until someone moves the car. To keep it short:

• Tell your adjuster where the car is right away, with the yard’s name, address and phone number.
• Ask the yard what it needs to release the car: usually a photo ID, proof you own it, and payment of the tow and storage charges.
• If it’s likely a total loss, ask your insurer to move it to their own facility quickly.
• If it’s repairable, a second, shorter tow from the yard to the body shop starts the repair and stops the storage clock.

The cheapest storage is none. If the car can go straight to your driveway or a body shop, say so when you call.

What accident towing costs, and the mistakes that cost more

We don’t post one flat price for accident tows, because no two are the same job. What moves the number:

• Distance from the scene to the drop-off. A tow across Cary is not the same as a run to a shop in Raleigh or a long-distance tow to your hometown mechanic.
• Recovery work before the tow: winching out of a ditch, off a median or out of the trees.
• Storage days, if it goes to a yard, and a second tow later.

The mistakes we see most often:

• Standing between the cars or in the lane to look at damage. Get off the road first.
• Skipping the police report because the other driver seems nice. Stories change by Monday.
• Driving a damaged car “just to get home.” A leaking radiator, a bent wheel or a rubbing tire can turn a repairable car into a second wreck.

Accident towing FAQ

Can I choose my own tow company after a crash in Cary?

Generally, yes. Tell the officer you’re calling your own truck. If the car is blocking traffic and has to move right now, or you aren’t able to call, the officer will use the rotation list. Ask where the car is going either way.

Do I have to call the police for a minor fender bender?

North Carolina requires you to notify law enforcement when there’s an injury or at least $1,000 in property damage. A report also protects you if the other driver’s story changes. We’d call.

My car is an EV or all-wheel drive. Does that change the tow?

This post covers what goes wrong with cars parked at the airport, what our driver does when the truck gets to you, what to have ready, and what decides the price. For the short version, see our RDU Airport towing page.

Why cars fail in airport parking

A car that ran fine on the way to the airport can be dead when you get back. Nothing dramatic happened. It just sat.

Modern cars draw a little power even when they’re off: the alarm, the keyless entry, computers that never fully sleep. A healthy battery handles a week or two of that. A tired one does not, and you usually don’t find out it was tired until you land.

• Dead battery. The most common airport call. A dome light, a door not quite latched, or simply an older battery and a long trip. Summer heat and winter cold both make it worse.
• Flat tire. A slow leak you’d never notice driving every day has all week to empty the tire.
• Lockout. Keys in the trunk with the luggage, or a fob with a dead battery.
• Out of fuel. The low-fuel light was already on when you parked.
• Won’t start, and it isn’t the battery. A starter, a fuel pump, or a warning light that means the car shouldn’t be driven. That one is a tow.

Where we work at RDU

We take calls across the airport: the ParkRDU lots and decks, the areas around Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, the cell phone waiting lot, the rental car area, and the hotels and office parks along Aviation Parkway and Airport Boulevard.

We also cover the roads you take to get there. If the car quits on I-40 or I-540 on the way to a flight, or on Aviation Parkway or John Brantley Boulevard inside the airport, that’s the same phone call. If it happens on the interstate, read our I-40 and I-440 breakdown checklist first; a highway shoulder is a different situation from a parking space.

The terminal curbs are for active loading and unloading only, and airport staff keep them moving. If your car dies at the curb, tell the nearest airport employee or officer right away, then call us. We’ll meet you wherever they direct the vehicle.

Jump start or tow? How to tell from the driver’s seat

You can often tell before we arrive, and it helps us send the right truck.

• Nothing at all, or rapid clicking, when you turn the key or press the button: almost always the battery. A jump start usually gets you home.
• The engine cranks strongly but won’t fire: probably fuel or ignition, not the battery. Expect a tow.
• It starts with a jump but dies as soon as the cables come off: the battery is finished or the charging system isn’t working. Tow it to a shop or to your driveway.
• A red oil-pressure or temperature light, or fluid on the ground under the engine: don’t keep trying. Tow it.

What to do when your car won’t start at RDU

1. Stop cranking. Two or three tries is enough. More drains what’s left in the battery and can overheat the starter.
2. Pin down where you are. Lot or deck name, level, row or section sign, nearest shuttle stop. “Somewhere in long-term” costs everyone time.
3. Call (919) 230-4498. Tell us what the car does when you try to start it, the year, make and model, and whether it’s all-wheel drive or electric.
4. Find your parking ticket or the card you entered with. Parking is still owed when the car leaves the lot, whether it drives out or rides out on a truck.
5. Stay with the car, or tell us where you’ll be. If it’s late, hot or cold, wait in the locked car or at a lit shuttle shelter and keep your phone on.
6. Decide where it goes if it has to be towed. Home, your regular shop, or a shop near the airport. Have the address ready.

The mistakes we see most: shutting the car off at the exit booth right after a jump (keep it running and drive), driving out of the lot on a flat (it can ruin the tire and damage the wheel), and taking a rideshare home to deal with it “tomorrow” while the parking charges keep adding up.

What our driver does when the truck gets to you

On a jump start, the driver checks the battery terminals first, because a loose or corroded connection looks exactly like a dead battery. Then the car gets a proper jump, and the driver watches what it does once it’s running. Details are on our jump start page.

On a lockout, the door is opened without damage to the lock, the glass or the weather seal. Have your ID ready. More on the lockout page.

On a flat, we put your spare on if you have a usable one. Many newer cars don’t carry a spare, and one that has sat in the trunk for years is often flat too. With no spare, the car is towed to a tire shop. See tire changes.

On a tow, the right truck matters. Our Ram 5500 wrecker with a Jerr-Dan wheel-lift is the quick hookup for most front- or rear-wheel-drive cars. All-wheel-drive vehicles, EVs, lowered cars and anything damaged underneath go on one of our two Isuzu NRR rollback carriers with 21-foot Jerr-Dan beds, all four wheels off the ground.

Airport parking adds a few wrinkles. Decks have posted height limits, so tell us the level and the clearance posted at the entrance; that decides which truck comes and how the car gets out to where it can be loaded. Rows are tight, so tell us if you’re nosed in against a wall or boxed in. And if the car is a rental, call the rental company first. It’s their vehicle and they have their own process.

Flying in to a car you don’t trust? Call before you land

If the battery was weak before you left, the car has been sitting for weeks, or it’s the first cold snap of the year, call us from the gate or from baggage claim. We can time the truck to your arrival so the waiting happens while you collect your bags, not in the lot afterward.

The same goes for the trip out. If the car acts up on the way to a flight you can’t miss, we can tow it home or to your shop while you’re in the air. And if you live out of town and the car needs to go home without you, that’s a long-distance tow on a rollback, quoted before the truck rolls.

What an airport call costs: the factors

We don’t publish a price list, because the honest answer depends on the job. You get the price on the phone before a truck is sent. What moves it:

• The service. A jump start, lockout, tire change or fuel delivery is a roadside call. A tow is a bigger job.
• How far the car is going. RDU to Morrisville is short. Cary, Apex, Raleigh and Durham are normal runs. Farther costs more.
• Which truck it needs. Wheel-lift or rollback, decided by the drivetrain and the condition of the car.
• Access. An open surface lot is simple. An upper deck level, a car pinned against a wall, or one that won’t shift out of Park takes more time and equipment.

Common questions

Do you come out to RDU in the middle of the night?

Yes. We answer the phone and run trucks 24 hours a day, every day, and late arrivals are a regular part of airport work. Call and you’ll get a real estimate based on where our trucks are at that moment.

My car is an EV or all-wheel drive. Can you tow it from the airport?

Yes. It goes on a rollback carrier with all four wheels off the ground, so tell us it’s an EV or AWD when you call. One note for EVs: a dead 12-volt battery can keep an electric car from powering on even when the main battery has plenty of charge, and that is often fixed with a jump.

Can you take my car from RDU to my house in Cary or to my shop?

Yes. RDU to anywhere in the Triangle is a routine run, including Cary, Morrisville, Apex, Holly Springs, Raleigh and Durham. Have the address ready, and let the shop know if the car will arrive after hours.

Do I have to be with the car?

For a jump start or a lockout, yes; we need you and your ID there. For a tow it’s best if you are, but if you’ve already left for a flight, call us and we’ll work out the keys and the details by phone.

We wrote a similar guide for breaking down on US-1 in Cary; this one is for the interstates, which are faster, wider and less forgiving. It’s most of what roadside assistance in Cary, NC comes down to on a highway shoulder.

Why I-40 and I-440 are different from a Cary street

I-40 through Cary and Morrisville carries the RTP commute, the airport traffic off Airport Boulevard (Exit 284), and everything moving between Raleigh and Durham. From Aviation Parkway (Exit 285) to the US-1/US-64 and I-440 split at Exit 293, the road runs against a concrete barrier or guardrail on the left for long stretches, leaving a narrow left shoulder.

I-440 starts at that interchange and loops around Raleigh. Its western end, past Jones Franklin Road (Exit 1C), Melbourne Road (1D), Western Boulevard (2) and Wade Avenue (3), was rebuilt a few years ago and moves fast. We’ve covered wrecker service on the I-440 Beltline before; one detail worth repeating: the Beltline is signed east and west, not “inner” and “outer,” and a dispatcher can’t find you with the old names. Add overnight work zones with barrels where the shoulder used to be, and a dead car in a live lane is the most dangerous thing on the road.

The five-minute checklist

1. Signal right and keep rolling. Use your momentum to reach the right shoulder, a ramp or the next exit. Right over left every time; the left is narrow, against the barrier, and no tow truck can work there safely.
2. Hazards on, wheels right, brake set. Turn the front wheels away from traffic so a bump from behind pushes the car onto the grass, not into the lane. At night, turn on the interior light too, so the car reads as occupied.
3. Decide: stay in or get out. Fully on the shoulder with no smoke or fuel smell? Stay belted in the car. Partly in a lane, pinned against a wall, or smelling fuel? Get out on the side away from traffic and behind the guardrail.
4. Pin your location. Direction first (I-40 east toward Raleigh or west toward RTP and Durham; I-440 east or west), then the last exit, the next exit, and the mile marker if you can see one. “I-40 west, just past Harrison Avenue, Exit 287, right shoulder” gets a truck to you. “On 40 near Cary” does not.
5. Make the right call. If any part of the car is in a lane, anyone is hurt, or you feel unsafe, call 911 first so a patrol car with lights can get behind you (*HP, or *47, also reaches the Highway Patrol). Then call us at (919) 230-4498.
6. Be visible, not a target. Don’t stand behind the car, between the car and traffic, or lean into the engine bay on the traffic side. Set out triangles only from the shoulder side.
7. Wait smart. Keep the phone charged and the ringer on. If a tow truck you didn’t request pulls up, ask who dispatched it before anyone hooks anything. When ours arrives, stay put and let the driver come to your window.

Stay in the car or get out? The one decision that matters most

People get hurt on interstate shoulders when they are outside the car, where a drifting driver ends up. So the default is simple: if the whole car is beyond the white line, on a full-width shoulder or the grass, and nothing is smoking or leaking, stay in it, belted, hazards on, and wait.

Get out when staying in is the bigger risk: any part of the car still in a lane; a shoulder so narrow a passing mirror could clip your door; smoke, fire or the smell of gasoline. Exit through the door away from traffic, take everyone with you, and go where a car cannot follow: behind the guardrail or up the embankment, never directly in front of or behind your car, because a struck car moves toward those spots. Don’t cross the interstate on foot or walk the shoulder to an exit. After dark, our night-driving safety guide adds a few more habits.

Tell us exactly where you are, and what to have ready

A vague location slows the truck down. On I-40 the exit numbers run west to east through our area: I-540 (283), Airport Boulevard (284), Aviation Parkway in Morrisville (285), Harrison Avenue in Cary (287), Wade Avenue (289), NC-54 (290), Cary Towne Boulevard (291), and the split at 293, where US-1 south and US-64 west peel off toward Apex and I-440 begins.

Then have these ready: direction and which shoulder; make, model and color; whether the car is all-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, electric or a hybrid, which decides the truck we send; what happened; how many people are with you, including kids in car seats and pets; and where the car should go. If your insurance roadside plan reimburses tows, ask us for an itemized receipt.

A shoulder call doesn’t always end in a tow. For a dead battery, a shredded tire or an empty tank we’ll often do the jump start, tire change or fuel delivery on the spot if the shoulder is wide enough to work safely; if it isn’t, we hook the car and move it to the next exit first.

What the WTF Towing driver does when the truck pulls up

You’ll see the amber lights first. The driver parks the truck angled behind your car, a little wider and a length or so back. That position is deliberate: the truck is a shield between the work and the travel lane. North Carolina’s Move Over law requires drivers to change lanes or slow down for a stopped tow truck with its lights on, but plenty don’t, so the driver sets up as if nobody will.

Next, the driver walks up on the shoulder side, checks on everyone, confirms the destination, and gets you into the cab. Then the hookup. On a narrow shoulder, the driver may hook quickly, pull to the next exit or a wide spot, and finish securing the car there; that’s getting everyone away from the lanes first, not corner-cutting. Where the car goes is your call: a shop in Cary, home to Morrisville or Holly Springs, a body shop in Raleigh, a service department in Durham, or, for Greensboro, Charlotte or the coast, long-distance towing on a rollback.

Common mistakes we see on I-40 and I-440

• Stopping on the left shoulder when the right was reachable. Nobody can work safely against the median wall. If you’re already there, stay belted inside and tell us on the phone.
• Getting out to look at the damage. Behind the car or at the traffic-side tire is exactly where a distracted driver ends up. Look later, in a parking lot.
• Changing a tire on the traffic side. Your back is to the lane while you crouch. Let a truck pull you to the exit, or let us do it with the truck as a shield.
• Creeping along in the lane on a shredded tire. A car crawling in interstate traffic is a target. Get onto the shoulder and stop.

Common questions

Should I call 911 or the tow company first?

Car in a lane, anyone hurt, or you feel unsafe: 911 first, then us. Fully on the shoulder with a mechanical problem: call us directly at (919) 230-4498.

My car is an EV or all-wheel drive. Does that change anything?

How fast that door opens depends on a few things you can actually influence. Here’s what sets the clock, what the driver does when he gets there, and what to have ready so it’s over before your ice cream melts.

Fenton and Park West Village are two different lockouts

Fenton sits in the northwest corner of the I-40 and Cary Towne Boulevard interchange on the east side of Cary. The restaurants, shops, apartments and the movie theater line a walkable main street, and most of the parking is a street back in decks and lots. Lockouts here happen after dinner or a late movie: keys left on the seat, a fob zipped into a bag, a car that locked itself on level three at 11 p.m. From our side of town it’s a straight run down the interstate, with the Maynard Road loop as the backup at rush hour.

Park West Village is on the southeast corner of Chapel Hill Road (NC-54) and Cary Parkway in Morrisville, and it’s the opposite kind of place: open air and spread out, with a town-center block of restaurants and the theater, a big-box section with the anchor stores, and wide surface lots between them. This is where the classic grocery-store lockout happens. Hands full, keys set on the seat, door swung shut, auto-lock timer finishes the job. It’s practically next door to our base, which is why we cover Cary fast from Morrisville.

What actually sets the clock on a lockout

The unlock is not the slow part. The drive is. Where our nearest truck is when you call, whether it’s a Tuesday afternoon or a Saturday night, and what I-40 and Cary Parkway are doing decide most of your wait. We give you a real ETA on the phone, and if the truck is finishing a tow across town, we say so.

Next is finding you. Fenton’s decks look alike from the inside, a white SUV on level three is one of twenty, and Park West Village’s lots are long and busy. In a deck we need the deck, the level and the nearest stairwell; in a lot, the store you’re facing and the row. That saves more time than anything the driver does with his tools.

Then the vehicle: a pickup with a mechanical lock button and a new SUV with keyless entry and flush handles are two different jobs. And last, proof of ownership. The driver confirms the vehicle is yours before he opens it, and your registration is usually locked inside with the keys, so have a photo ID ready, and your insurance card on your phone if you can.

What the driver actually does at your door

First he looks at the door and the locking system, because the tool depends on the car. On most vehicles he slides a protective guard into the top of the door frame and uses an inflatable wedge to open a small gap, just enough for a long-reach tool to press the unlock button or pull the interior handle. The paint and the weather seal stay where they are. On older cars with a post lock on the sill, a different tool lifts the post.

What he never does is go into the window channel with a slim jim on a modern car. That’s how people end up with a dead window regulator or airbag wiring pulled loose, and the repair costs many times what the lockout does.

A few designs take longer: coupes and convertibles with frameless windows, vehicles that deadlock when the fob is pressed twice so the interior handles do nothing, flush handles with the only unlock button buried in the console, and cargo vans with a bulkhead, which open from the cab only.

When the door opens, he checks that the keys are where you thought. If they’re in the trunk, he pops it from inside or folds a rear seat. If the fob is dead rather than locked in, he shows you the mechanical key hidden inside it and the keyhole under the cap on the driver’s door handle. If the keys are truly gone, the same truck turns the lockout into a tow. What to do when you’re locked out at Fenton or Park West Village

1. Make sure everyone is out. A child or a pet locked inside is an emergency, not a lockout. Call 911 first, then call us and say so; it goes to the front of the line.
2. Try every door and the hatch. Auto-lock timers don’t always catch a rear door that was opened last, and that thirty-second check ends a surprising number of lockouts.
3. Pin your spot. At Fenton: the deck, the level, and the stairwell or storefront you walked out of. At Park West Village: the town-center block or the big-box lots, the store you’re facing, and the row. Note your make, model, color and plate.
4. Get your ID ready and know where the registration is inside the car.

Mistakes that turn a lockout into a repair bill

The coat hanger is still the most common one. It scratches the paint, tears the weather seal, and on most cars built this century it can’t reach anything useful. Breaking a window is worse: a rear quarter glass on a modern SUV costs several times what a lockout does, the alarm goes off, and you drive home with glass in the seat. Prying the door too far bends the frame and leaves you permanent wind noise on US-1. In winter, forcing a frozen handle snaps it off.

Then there are the mistakes that happen on the phone. Calling the first number on a search ad, which may dispatch someone from anywhere at a price that changes on arrival, instead of a local company that answers with its own name. Sitting on hold with your insurance roadside plan for an hour while a dog pants in the back seat. Or walking off for coffee without telling anyone while the driver circles the deck.

The bigger question is the one people ask standing next to the hood: do I need a jump, or a new battery? Here’s how to tell, what our driver actually does, and what moves the price.

Why batteries die at Crossroads Plaza, and in every other Cary lot

Crossroads Plaza sits at Walnut Street and Crossroads Boulevard, right off US-1/US-64 at Exit 101. It’s one of Cary’s busiest shopping areas, and it produces dead-battery calls for the same reasons Waverly Place, Fenton, and Park West Village do.

First, the weather. Heat kills batteries faster than cold does. A Cary summer cooks the inside of a battery for months, and September still runs into the 90s. The damage shows up on the first cool morning, or after the car sits for two hours while you shop and a tired battery can’t spin the starter.

Second, short hops across the lot with the headlights, blower, and screen on never give the alternator time to put back what the starter took out. Then the car sits with a hatch light on, and that finishes it.

Third, age. Most batteries give you somewhere around three to five years, and Cary’s heat pushes you toward the short end. If yours is four summers old, a slow crank isn’t bad luck. It’s a warning.

Jump start or new battery? How to tell before we get there

You don’t have to diagnose it, but the sound the car makes tells us a lot, so listen once before you call.

• Rapid clicking, dim dash lights: the battery is low. A jump almost always works, and the battery may be fine if a light was left on.
• Nothing at all, no lights, no chime: the battery is fully flat or a terminal clamp is loose or corroded. A jump usually works once the connection is cleaned.
• Slow, groaning crank for the past few mornings: the battery is aging. A jump gets you home, but replace it soon.
• Jumped yesterday, dead again today: the battery won’t hold a charge, or the alternator isn’t charging it. A second jump is a bandage, not a fix.
• One loud click and no crank: usually the starter. A jump won’t help; the same truck tows you to a shop.
• Cranks strong but won’t fire: not the battery. Fuel, spark, or immobilizer trouble needs a mechanic.

With push-button start, a dash that lights up normally but won’t recognize the key means a dead fob battery, not a dead car.

If the car cranked slowly last week, or it has been through a few Cary summers, the honest answer is “jump today, new battery this week.” A jump start is a bridge to the parts store, not a repair.

What the WTF Towing driver actually does

He doesn’t hook cables to his truck. The driver carries a professional booster pack with enough current to start a full-size pickup, and the procedure on our jump start service page is the same every time.

First he looks before he connects. Corroded or loose terminals mimic a dead battery, and a cracked, swollen, or leaking case means the battery gets left alone and the call becomes a tow. Then he confirms polarity and connects to the right points, which on many newer cars means remote jump posts under the hood because the battery lives in the trunk or under a seat. Hybrids and EVs have a 12-volt battery that can strand you even when the main pack is full. He knows where those are.

Once it’s running, he checks the charging system. If the alternator isn’t feeding the battery, you’ll be back where you started before you reach US-1, and it’s better to learn that in the lot. Then you get a straight answer: “you left a light on, the battery’s fine,” or “this one’s done, go get a battery today and don’t shut it off until you’re there.” We don’t sell or install batteries, so there’s no upsell in that answer.

If the jump doesn’t take, you’re not making a second call. We quote the price upfront on the phone. What changes the number is the same short list that drives every roadside call. Where you are: Crossroads Plaza is a short, direct run from our base in Morrisville, while a lot in RTP or Holly Springs takes longer. When you call: nights, weekends, and holidays are covered 24/7, but they’re not priced like a Tuesday afternoon. Access: a car on the top level of a deck, in a tight garage, or with a battery under the rear seat takes more time than one in an open lot. And whether it stays a jump or becomes a tow matters most of all.

Common mistakes that turn a dead battery into a bigger bill

The most expensive one is a stranger’s jumper cables. The wrong order, or clamps touching, can blow fuses and damage modules on a modern car, and many cheap cables are too thin to start a truck anyway. If you’re not certain of the order, don’t.

The second is cranking too long. Holding the key for thirty seconds on a weak battery overheats the starter. Short tries, with everything else switched off.

The third is treating the jump as the fix. Idle five minutes in the lot, shut it off at home, and it’s dead again in the driveway at 6 a.m. Give it a real drive, and if the driver said it’s done, replace it that day. Every deep discharge shortens what’s left.

The fourth is ignoring the cause. A trunk light that never turns off, a dashcam wired to constant power, or a door that doesn’t latch will drain a new battery just like the old one. Tell the driver.

And the fifth is going into fall unprepared. September and October are when Cary’s summer battery damage surfaces, which is part of why fall is peak tow season in the Triangle. A slow crank now is your cheapest warning.

What to do when your car won’t start at Crossroads Plaza

1. Try once more with everything off: headlights, blower, radio. Car in Park, foot on the brake, then listen for clicking, one click, or silence.
2. Check the obvious: a dome or hatch light left on, a trunk that didn’t latch. With push-button start and a lit dash, hold the fob against the button and try again.
3. If you can pop the hood safely, look at the terminals for white or green crust. Don’t touch it with bare hands.
