Stuck in mud, a ditch, gravel or snow in Cary? Call (919) 230-4498. WTF Towing’s winch-out service runs 24/7 and gets your vehicle back on solid ground without tearing it up.
A winch-out is the job for when your vehicle is off the road and can’t get itself back on: you slid off a wet shoulder on Green Level Church Road, backed into a soft yard, dropped a wheel off the edge of a gravel drive, got high-centered on a curb at Crossroads, or found out the hard way that the grass next to the Cary Parkway greenway doesn’t hold a car after three days of rain. Regular towing won’t do it. The vehicle has to be pulled free first, carefully, and then you decide whether it needs a tow or just needs to drive away.
What our winch-out service includes
- Vehicle recovery from mud, ditches, sand, gravel, snow and ice, embankments, retaining walls and curbs.
- Rollover and accident recovery — righting a vehicle and getting it onto the truck safely.
- Equipment and trailer recovery — skid steers, man lifts, utility trailers and work trucks sunk on job sites.
- Proper rigging — recovery straps, snatch blocks and attachment points chosen for your vehicle, not a chain hooked to whatever’s closest.
- A tow if you need one — if the recovery reveals damage, the same truck takes you to a shop.
When to call for a winch-out instead of trying it yourself
Spinning the tires digs you deeper and can burn out a clutch or cook a transmission. A friend’s pickup and a tow strap can rip a bumper off or snap a strap at speed. If the vehicle is more than a few inches off firm ground, on a slope, or anywhere near traffic, stop and call. It’s cheaper than the damage.
How a winch-out works
- You call (919) 230-4498 with your location and a description of the situation. Photos help if you can send them.
- We quote the price upfront and give you a real ETA.
- The driver assesses the angle, the ground and the attachment points, sets up rigging and safety zones, and winches the vehicle out under control.
- We check the vehicle for damage from the excursion — tires, undercarriage, fluids — and either send you on your way or tow you to a shop.
Where we do winch-outs
Ditches along US-64 and NC-55, soft shoulders on Old Apex Road, Ten-Ten Road and Holly Springs Road, neighborhood yards and drainage swales across Cary, Apex and Morrisville, construction sites in Apex and Holly Springs, parking-deck curbs downtown, and I-40 and NC-540 embankments. One of our better-known jobs was a man lift sunk in gravel on an Apex site — the kind of recovery that needs real equipment and someone who’s done it before.
Our trucks
A Ram 5500 wrecker with a Jerr-Dan wheel-lift and winch for road-shoulder and tight-spot recoveries, and two Isuzu rollback carriers with winches for pulling a vehicle up the bed when it can’t roll under its own power.
What drives the price of a winch-out
We quote every recovery before the truck rolls, and the number comes from the job, not the clock. The things that move it: how far the vehicle is from solid ground (a wheel off the edge of a driveway is a short pull; a car nose-down in a drainage swale is not), the angle and whether it is sitting on a slope, how deep it has sunk and what it has sunk in (wet clay around new construction in west Cary holds on harder than gravel), the weight (a loaded work truck or a lifted SUV needs heavier rigging than a sedan), and whether it needs a tow afterward. Tell us what you can see when you call, send a photo if you have one, and the quote is the quote.
Mistakes that turn a winch-out into a tow
Most of the damage we see on winch-out calls happened before we got there. Spinning the tires polishes the ground under them and digs the car in to the frame; once it is resting on the body, nothing short of a lift gets it out. Floor mats, cardboard and kitty litter under the tires work on ice, not in Carolina clay. A tow strap on a friend’s pickup pulls from whatever it is hooked to — a bumper beam, a tie-down loop never meant for a shock load, a control arm — and a strap that lets go under load is dangerous to everyone standing nearby. Rocking the car between drive and reverse cooks an automatic transmission. And driving through standing water to “get to the other side” is how a stuck car becomes a flooded one.
The right move is boring: stop, put it in park, get everyone away from the slope or the traffic side, and call. A proper recovery pulls from rated points, in line, under control, and the car drives away.
“Winch out near me”: Cary, Apex, Morrisville and the roads between
When you search for a winch-out near you, Google picks the companies closest to where you are standing. We are based in the Cary–Morrisville area, so for a Cary caller the truck starts close: the US-1 and US-64 shoulders, Green Level Church Road and the new subdivisions off it, Cary Parkway and Kildaire Farm Road, the greenway edges, and the parking decks downtown and at Fenton. Apex and Morrisville are a short run down NC-55 or NC-54, and we work job sites in Apex and Holly Springs every week. If you are on the Jordan Lake side of US-64 or out toward New Hill, call anyway — the trucks carry the rigging for soft ground and long pulls, and you will have the ETA before you commit. Recovery is one part of what we do; towing in Cary, NC is the rest of it.

Winch-out questions
How much does a winch-out cost in Cary?
It depends on how far off the road the vehicle is and what it takes to reach it. We quote it before the truck rolls, and there’s no charge for asking.
Will winching damage my car?
Not when it’s done right. We rig to proper recovery points and pull under control. Spinning the tires or having a friend yank you out with a strap is what causes damage.
Can you recover a vehicle that rolled over?
Yes. Rollover and accident recovery is part of the service, and we coordinate with police on the scene when needed.
Do you winch out equipment on job sites?
Yes — lifts, skid steers, trailers and work trucks stuck in mud or gravel are a regular call for us in Apex, Cary and Holly Springs.
Can you winch out an all-wheel-drive vehicle or an EV?
Yes. AWD vehicles and EVs are pulled the same careful way, from the manufacturer’s recovery points, and if they need to leave the scene they ride on a flatbed so no wheels turn under power that is not their own.
Do you do winch-outs at night and in the rain?
Yes, 24 hours, every day. Rain is when most of these calls happen. We set up lighting and a safety zone and work the recovery the same way we would at noon; if a slope is too wet to work safely, we tell you on the phone.
