Flat tire in Cary? Call (919) 230-4498. WTF Towing comes to you 24/7, puts your spare on, and gets you moving — and if there’s no spare, we tow you to a tire shop.

Flats happen at the worst places: the shoulder of US-1 at rush hour, a dark stretch of Tryon Road, the far corner of a parking lot at Park West Village with kids in the back seat. Changing a tire yourself is fine in a driveway. On a highway shoulder, with traffic passing at 70 mph, it’s one of the most dangerous things a driver can do. Let us do it.

What our roadside tire service includes

  • Spare tire installation — we jack the vehicle safely, remove the flat, mount your spare, and torque the lugs.
  • A quick check of the spare’s pressure and condition before you drive on it.
  • Tow to a tire shop if you have no spare, if the spare is flat too, or if the wheel or rim is damaged.
  • Run-flat and TPMS guidance — many newer cars, including most BMWs and many EVs, ship with no spare at all. We’ll tell you your options.

When a tire change becomes a tow

No spare. A donut spare that’s been flat in the trunk for years. A bent rim from a pothole. A blowout that damaged the fender. Two flats at once (it happens on debris). In any of those cases we’ll load the vehicle on the rollback and take it to a tire shop of your choice — or one we trust in Cary, Apex or Raleigh if you don’t have one — instead of leaving you on the shoulder.

How it works

  1. Call (919) 230-4498 with your location and whether you have a spare. A cross street or exit number is enough.
  2. We quote the price upfront and give you a real ETA.
  3. If you’re on a highway, get as far right as you can, hazards on, and stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt on until the driver arrives.
  4. We change the tire or load the vehicle, and you’re on your way.

Where we change tires

Everywhere in Cary and the Triangle: I-40, I-440, NC-540 and US-1 shoulders, Cary Parkway, Kildaire Farm Road, Davis Drive and NC-55, the shopping lots at Crossroads, Fenton and Waverly Place, RDU parking lots, office parks in RTP and Morrisville, and driveways from Preston to Holly Springs.

Keep your spare ready

Check the spare’s pressure every few months — a spare loses air sitting in the trunk. Make sure the jack and lug wrench are actually in the car, and know whether your car has a spare at all. If it doesn’t, keep our number handy.

Why Cary tires go flat

Most of our flats aren’t nails. They’re sidewall cuts from curbs in tight shopping-center lots, potholes on the older stretches of Kildaire Farm Road and Chapel Hill Road after a wet winter, and blowouts on US-1 and I-40 from tires that were run under-inflated through a hot summer. Debris on the highway — a shredded truck-tire carcass, a dropped ladder — takes out two tires at once more often than you’d think, and that’s always a tow. The tell for an under-inflation blowout is a tire that looks fine one day and shreds at 65 mph the next; check pressure on a cold morning once a month and you’ll never have one. Our summer tips post has the heat version of this.

What the driver actually does

On a highway shoulder he positions the truck behind your car with the light bar on, angled to push traffic out into the next lane, and sets cones. He looks at where the car is sitting: soft shoulder, slope, or gravel means the jack goes on a plate or the car gets moved a few feet first, because a jack sinking into a shoulder is how cars fall off jacks. He breaks the lug nuts loose with the wheel on the ground, lifts the car at the manufacturer’s jack point (not the pinch weld, not the floor), swaps the tire, and torques the lugs in a star pattern to spec with a torque wrench — not an impact gun run until it stops, which is how studs get stretched and wheels come loose. He checks the spare’s pressure before you drive on it; a spare that’s been in the trunk for five years is usually at half pressure. If the flat is a repairable puncture he’ll tell you, so you can get it plugged instead of buying a tire.

Donut spares, run-flats and cars with no spare

A compact “donut” spare is rated for about 50 miles at 50 mph. That gets you from US-1 to a tire shop in Cary, not to Charlotte. Run-flat tires can be driven flat for a short distance at low speed, but many can’t be repaired afterward, and on some cars the tire-pressure system won’t let you drive far. A growing share of new cars — most EVs and many luxury models — ship with no spare and a sealant kit; the kit won’t fix a sidewall cut, and the sealant makes the tire unrepairable, so for those we usually recommend the tow straight to the shop. Whatever you drive, know which of these you have before you need it.

Tire-change mistakes that cost people money

  • Changing it on the traffic side of the car on the highway. If the flat is on the driver’s side on US-1, it’s a job for a truck with a light bar, not a scissor jack.
  • Jacking on the wrong spot. The plastic sill trim and the floor pan aren’t jack points. A crushed rocker panel costs more than a tire.
  • Driving on a shredded tire “to the next exit.” One mile on the rim ruins the wheel and can damage the brake and suspension parts behind it.
  • Lugs tightened with a boot instead of a wrench. Under-torqued wheels come loose; over-torqued studs snap. Get them checked at the shop.
  • Trusting a donut for a week. It’s a temporary tire. Get the real one fixed within a day or two.

Tire change questions

Do you sell tires?

No — we install your spare, or tow you to a tire shop. We can recommend shops in Cary, Apex and Raleigh.

What if I don’t have a spare?

We tow you to a tire shop. Many newer cars and most EVs ship without one, so this is a common call.

Can you change a tire on the highway?

Yes, and we’d rather you let us. Highway-shoulder tire changes are dangerous for drivers; our trucks carry lighting and we set up a safety zone.

How much does a roadside tire change cost in Cary?

We quote it upfront when you call, based on where you are. There’s no charge for asking.

Can you fix or plug the tire on the spot?

We put your spare on or tow you; a tire shop does the plug or patch. The driver will tell you whether the puncture looks repairable so you know what to ask for.

My lug nuts have a locking key and I can’t find it. Can you still change it?

Check the glove box, the trunk tool kit and the door pockets first — that’s where they hide. If it’s truly gone, it’s a tow to a shop that can remove the lock.

Can you change a tire on a truck or a lifted SUV?

Yes. The wrecker carries the jacks and the breaker bar for full-size trucks, and we handle lifted vehicles regularly.
